The majority of events are free to all schools and academies. Where a cost is incurred, an invoice will be sent to you and this should be paid before the event takes place. In the unfortunate event that a place is cancelled, we regret that a cancellation fee will be invoiced to schools and cancellation fees are outlined under the relevant event.

An opportunity to explore the new Diocesan Syllabus for Religious Education

A workshop has been arranged to enable delegates to explore the long-awaited Diocesan Syllabus for Religious Education. The workshop will look at:

 Underpinning principles  Expectations and Requirements for schools  Links with the Understanding Christianity materials  Curriculum support  Assessment

The day will include sessions on information giving, practical tasks and opportunities to share ideas and good practice with colleagues from across the diocese. Delegates will be provided with a copy of the syllabus to work with on the day.

Cost

£45 per person or £78 for two people from the same school. Lunch and refreshments are included. In the event of a booking being cancelled within 28 days of the event, a cancellation fee of £35 will be charged. This event is being subsidised by the Diocesan Board of Education and will include a hard copy of the new R E Syllabus.

Target audience

Leaders in Church Schools, including governors and linked clergy. Members of staff involved in delivering religious education in schools including subject leaders, teachers and HLTAs.

 Do you fully understand what needs to happen before engaging in a building project?

 Do you know what your responsibilities are under the HSE Construction Design and Management Regulations?

 Do you know who the Diocesan Board of Education are and what they do?

 Do you know what approvals are required from the diocese to undertake a project and how to complete the paperwork?

 Can you claim VAT back on expenditure?

 Has your school a Building Development Plan in place. If not, how do you produce one?

 Do you know what funding streams are available to you and how do you apply for additional support when needed?

If you need answers to any of these points, and much more, this training could be for you.

Two workshops are available on Wednesday 1 November 2017. A morning workshop from 9.30 am – 11.30 am and an afternoon workshop from 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm.

Whether new to headship, new to Church schools or new to a different school, the induction days provide the opportunity to meet colleagues starting a new leadership post. Leaders at all phases of their headship career benefit from the whole programme. Specifically:

 Those new to headship benefit from the networking provided by the Education Team, and new and experienced Church school headteachers, including:

o Meeting the team

o The structure of diocesan education

o Building positive, inter-dependent relationships with local churches

o The national picture.

 Those new to Church school leadership and headship found out about the distinctive nature of Church Schools, including:

o Theological under-pinning of what makes a Church school distinctive

o Headteachers who attended the previous year share their Top Tips for leading a Church school

o An overview of the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools

o The Church of England’s Vision for Education: ‘Deeply Christian, Serving the Common Good’.

 Experienced Church school leaders from within the diocese or from other diocese, including:

o The partnership between diocesan school partners and schools

8 o Using your expertise and guidance to support headteachers new to Church Schools (mentoring)

o Refreshing and updating knowledge and expertise.

Day 1 will be based at Church House, Leeds. On Day 2, visits will be made to schools within the diocese. Headteachers should attend both days. Day 3 is a half day ‘reflection’ session at Church House, Leeds.

Cost

The induction days are free. Lunch will be provided on Day 1.

Understanding Christianity

The long-awaited project for teaching Christianity to pupils aged 4 years to 14 years

Understanding Christianity is based around a selection of core Christian concepts. Seeking to raise the levels of pupil’s religious literacy, it is structured to deepen pupils’ understanding of the story of Christianity alongside key beliefs and practices. The resources have been created by Church of England Education Department advisers and members of the RE Today team.

o The full Understanding Christianity resource, which is only available through the training, comprises 29 full units of work from Reception Year through to Year 9

o Over 150 photo-copiable resource sheets

o The Big Frieze illustration, setting the concepts within a wider biblical context

o Picturing Christianity – a visual teaching resource pack for learning from global Christianity

o Online access to additional materials and support

o Learning follows a spiral curriculum, a model which will be followed in the new diocesan syllabus to be published this summer

o The new diocesan syllabus and Understanding Christianity will complement each other in the teaching a learning of RE.

The current SIAMS framework is scheduled to change from September 2018. This will affect all Church of England schools and academies. The new framework will be significantly different.

The training and information day will:

 Consider the underlying reasoning behind the new framework

14  Outline and investigate the requirements of the new framework

 Consider how the new framework will affect the leadership and management of church schools and academies

 Consider the impact the new framework will have on those with responsibility for the delivery of education in church schools

 Offer opportunities for discussion around the impact of the new framework.

Delegates will be asked to bring a copy of their school development plan for their own personal use.

Distinctively Effective Schools: Leading R E and Collective Worship

A range of ongoing opportunities for teachers and leaders to meet with one another for training, updates and refresher training

Religious Education

A half-day session on Religious Education (RE) for R E Leaders and Co-ordinators which will include a practical topic delivery which can be incorporated into delivery from the new diocesan syllabus and Understanding Christianity. It is envisage that these sessions will deliver a combination of practical input and networking opportunities. The age range covered will be Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Collective Worship

16 This half-day session is for those who are responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of collective worship. We will be looking at questions raised in the national discussions around the new SIAMS framework and how these can be implemented/delivered/incorporated into current practice. There will be an opportunity to share best practice and discuss challenges and successes in diocesan schools.

Up to 3 delegates per school free if signed up to the Enhanced Services Provision.

Delegates may attend both sessions should they wish to do so. Please be advised that lunch will not be provided on these days; however, there is a café at Church House which sells sandwiches and snacks throughout the day.

The conference replaces the former Headteachers’ Conference and is now open to all senior leaders and Chairs and Vice-Chairs of governing bodies. A half day workshop for staff and governors who are new to Church Schools.

Distinctively Effective Schools: Ofsted Inspection & Self-Evaluation Wednesday 13 June 2018 at Church House, York Place, Leeds

A full day workshop for senior leaders and those involved in supporting monitoring and evaluation in schools. This will an opportunity to share self-evaluation practice and inspection preparation. It will also be an opportunity to share and enhance your knowledge and experience of self-evaluation in a Church School context.

18 Head Space! June 2018

Half day. Dedicated support time for Headteachers, including time to relax with tea, cake and information input relevant to the school situation from specialist guest speakers. This will offer an opportunity to share ideas with colleagues and take inspiration back to school. Annual Leavers’ Services Late June and early July 2018 throughout the diocese

The ever-popular Annual Leavers’ Services for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils moving on to new schools. An opportunity to come together to give thanks and to celebrate their achievements. Services will be held at Bradford Cathedral, Halifax Minster, Leeds Minster, Ripon Cathedral and Wakefield Cathedral.
