Job Summary
Under the direction of the Senior Mechanic and Superintendent, the Road Department Mechanic assists in the maintenance of County vehicles by performing a variety of tasks related to maintenance and repair of County vehicles.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains shop area, tools, and equipment to ensure safe working environment. Performs general preventative maintenance tasks on County equipment. Using various tools dismantles equipment for repair. Using welding equipment fabricates or repairs equipment. May sand and paint machinery. May operate snowplow equipment during the winter months. Must be able to develop and maintain working relationships with the public, fellow employees, and supervisors. Must be available on call for emergency repairs during off hours. Must be reliable and arrive to work on time. Is subject to department overtime and comp time policy and rules. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent. Associates degree or certificate in automotive mechanics and welding is preferred. Two years or experience as an apprentice mechanic or welder. Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Must provide own hand tools. Mechanical knowledge of light, medium, and heavy gasoline and diesel engines. Proficient in the use of mechanic and welding tools. Knowledge of safety practices required by state and federal laws. Ability to diagnose routine mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
Working conditions and physical demands
