Road Department Mechanic Job Description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Mechanic and Superintendent, the Road Department Mechanic assists in the maintenance of County vehicles by performing a variety of tasks related to maintenance and repair of County vehicles.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Maintains shop area, tools, and equipment to ensure safe working environment.  Performs general preventative maintenance tasks on County equipment.  Using various tools dismantles equipment for repair.  Using welding equipment fabricates or repairs equipment.  May sand and paint machinery.  May operate snowplow equipment during the winter months.  Must be able to develop and maintain working relationships with the public, fellow employees, and supervisors.  Must be available on call for emergency repairs during off hours.  Must be reliable and arrive to work on time.  Is subject to department overtime and comp time policy and rules.  Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 High School Diploma or Equivalent.  Associates degree or certificate in automotive mechanics and welding is preferred.  Two years or experience as an apprentice mechanic or welder.  Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License.  Must provide own hand tools.  Mechanical knowledge of light, medium, and heavy gasoline and diesel engines.  Proficient in the use of mechanic and welding tools.  Knowledge of safety practices required by state and federal laws.  Ability to diagnose routine mechanical and electrical malfunctions.

Working conditions and physical demands
