P R O G R A M D E S C R I P T I O N S A wide variety of education programs designed to meet the needs of teachers, students, and other members of our community are available at the Salisbury Zoo. To receive more information, please contact the Education Department. SCHOOL PROGRAMS ON-SITE:  GUIDED TOUR An informative tour through the Zoo led by a trained Wildlife Interpreter. Provides an introduction to species on exhibit, and reinforces concepts such as classification, adaptation, habitat and natural resource conservation. Approximately 90 minutes in length.  I SPY TOUR An interactive tour focusing on animal’s adaptations. Information on how adaptations assist animals in survival will be given prior to leading the group to exhibits, where we will play a version of the children’s I Spy game. Using visual characteristic paddles, the children will identify the various adaptations.  SELF GUIDED TOUR Upon registering your group, receive a packet of materials with lots of zoo information, scavenger hunts, animal facts, and pre and post lesson activities. On the day of your trip you can lead your group through the zoo and conduct various activities from your packet. WILDLIFE ENCOUNTER HANDS-ON CLASSROOM PROGRAM Choose from several theme-specific, interactive programs that utilize the zoo’s education animal collection. Topics include adaptations, diets, and classification. Approximately 45 minutes in length. STAGE PRESENTATION This presentation of three animals generally includes a bird, mammal and reptile, but can be tailored to your topic of study. Topics can be discussed with the education department at time of booking. Approximately 30 minutes in length. STORY TIME COMBO (preschool, early elementary) This presentation includes two animals and reading of a book associated to one of the animals presented.  LEAF (LOCAL ECOLOGY, ANIMALS AND FORESTS) Program for 3rd grade students focusing on local forests, their animals, uses, ecology, and threats. Approximately 2 hours in length  TEACHER TRAININGS Topic specific trainings are available for teachers. These trainings will give you a variety of ideas and ways you can incorporate science across the curriculum. SCHOOL PROGRAMS OFF-SITE:  ZOO-2-U We bring the zoo to you. Several of our Wildlife Encounter options are mobile. If you cannot come to us, we can come to you. With each of these programs we utilize the zoo’s education animal collection. Approximately 45 minutes in length.  ZOO-2-U Display Table display with live animals and biofacts for your event! PUBLIC PROGRAMS:  WILD PARTY Schedule a party at the Zoo – a unique way to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion!  ZOOSNOOZ Which animals are up all night? Explore the Zoo in the dark and then spend the night! Ideal for scouts and other youth groups.  STORYTIME Preschool children and accompanying adults are invited to join Wildlife Interpreters for an animal story and related craft project. Tuesdays at 10:00 am, March through September.  ZOOCAMP & JR. ZOOKEEPER These wild summer programs are perfect for young animal enthusiasts entering grades K-8.  ED TALKS Get an up close look at one of our Education Animals and find out details about their diet, adaptations and classification. There is also an opportunity to ask questions.  HOME SCHOOL WORKSHOPS Updated January 2018 These programs are offered each month on the first and third Thursdays at 10 AM for Elementary and 11:00 on the first Thursday for Middle school. Topics change each month. Parents must accompany elementary children. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Detailed information on each found under Volunteer on our website.  DOCENT- Long term, ongoing Wildlife Interpretation  INTERN- Semester long internships are available in various departments.  Service Learning- projects and opportunities to earn service hours for school, service organizations or just to help out the zoo.
