From Starlets to Stars Project

Brief Description: The art of playing chess is developing at an astounding pace. There is a huge number of new computer programmes to help quickly master the technique and tactics of chess playing, with a vast range of the opening variants offered. Computer-aided assessments of this or that programme mastering give an immense impetus to a further development and manifold improvement of chess playing skills. Thanks to winning the grant this year, the number of trainees and contest participants has grown significantly. For example, in 2007-2008, 36 schoolchildren took part in personal competition in Korsakov, while the number of the participants in the 2008-2009 competition has grown to 48! The trainees and their parents are most grateful to the Korsakov SD Partnership Council and Sakhalin Energy for the care and attention to the problems of children chess playing. Today, one feels quite comfortable in the chess club thanks to the previous grant. New chairs and tables, chess sets and chess clock—all this helps invite new members to the world of chess. Listed below are the results of questioning (the questionnaire included 4 questions): 1. Do you feel any changes in the arrangement of training sessions? Most of the respondents said ‘yes’. Training is now more efficient and target-oriented. 2. Please tell me your impressions about the changes in the chess club. Children believe that the club now looks more spacious and comfortable. Each trainee uses his/her personal chess set (unlike before). 3. Is there anything new in the competition process? All of the children are happy that they do not need to go through pre-qualification for competition as there is now space for everyone. There are no more conflicts because of the chess clock (the previous clock would stop during the play or would not run at all after just a few pushes of button). 4. Are there any other changes you would like to see in future? There were a lot of opinions voiced. Prevailing opinions: more work with computer and more advanced training procedures are needed. More competitions are needed. Background: Establishment of our section dates back to 1992, and many people have grown from novices to real chess players ever since. Listed below are the undisputed champions of the Sakhalin Oblast among schoolchildren: 1995—Yuri She, 1996—Leonid Alexandrov, 1997—L. Alexandrov, 1998—L. Alexandrov, 1999—L. Alexandrov, 2000—Artyom Rossiychenko, 2001—Artyom Rossiychenko, 2007— Alexey Shlotgauer, 2008—Alexey Shlotgauer; among girls: 1998—Maria Safronova, 2008—Anastasia Kolchanova; among adults: Alexey Kan and Sergey Gabrusev have won, many times, the Sakhalin Oblast championships. The Korsakov team has won the Sakhalin Oblast championship many times. The team has won the Sakhalin Oblast Schoolchildren Olympics three times. The team has repeatedly participated in the semifinals and finals of Russia's top league competition and took part in the chess festival as part of the 1998 World Youth Games in Moscow. After winning the grant, the town- and district schoolchildren competitions involved 48 persons (before that, there was space for only 36 persons). Problem: The players cannot improve their skills unless the chess section is fitted with computers. Project Goal: development and promotion of a healthy life-style. Enhancement of psychological health and bringing up unique sportsmen. Tasks: 1. Ensure that our club is recognised as the best chess club of the Sakhalin Oblast 2. An innovation in work 3.
