1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE DEPUTY KIMBER GIST, OF 12 THE BERKELEY COUNTY SHERRIFF’S OFFICE, WHO WAS 13 SHOT IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN FEBRUARY OF 2016. 14 15 Whereas, the primary responsibility of government is the 16 protection of its citizens; and 17 18 Whereas, the men and women of South Carolina law enforcement, 19 the “thin blue line,” daily carry out this sacred responsibility; and 20 21 Whereas, Corporal Kimber Gist of the Berkeley County Sherriff’s 22 Office embodies the finest traits of an officer of the law; and 23 24 Whereas, on February 26, 2016, after detaining two suspects, 25 Deputy Gist was shot by one of the suspects in the ear, lip, 26 stomach, and foot. Despite being shot eight times, Deputy Gist 27 heroically returned fire and evaded further injury; and 28 29 Whereas, with the help of Deputy Gist, officers located the suspect 30 in North Charleston; and 31 32 Whereas, Deputy Gist has since returned to work in the Berkeley 33 County Sherriff’s Office. She will receive the South Carolina 34 Sheriffs’ Association Medal of Valor on January 26, 2017; and 35 36 Whereas, in the face of tensions between the community and the 37 police, Deputy Gist often cites Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words 38 that “hate cannot drive out hate.” Deputy Gist’s positive attitude 39 and perseverance are inspirational, and as the only African 40 American woman working on the night shift, she has made history; 41 and 42

[305] 1 1 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the 2 pride and recognition that Kimber Gist has brought to her State 3 and nation and look to hear of her continued success in the days 4 ahead. Now, therefore, 5 6 Be it resolved by the Senate: 7 8 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 9 honor and recognize Deputy Kimber Gist of the Berkeley County 10 Sherriff’s Office for her incredible courage in the line of duty on 11 February 26, 2016. 12 13 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 14 Deputy Gist. 15 XX 16
