BASKETBALL BYLAWS

A ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Zone champions will be declared in each of the following events; AAAA Varsity Girls AAAA Varsity Boys AAA Varsity Girls AAA Varsity Boys AAAA Junior Varsity Girls AAAA Junior Varsity Boys AAA Junior Varsity Girls AAA Junior Varsity Boys

B. LEAGUE PLAY

1. Effective the school year 2007-2008, the SCAC will begin offering Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball leagues and championships. Teams will play a double round robin within their own classifications (AAA or AAAA). A Junior Varsity team would have to compete in the AAAA category in order to qualify to represent Zone 2. Any AAA team can declare itself AAAA at the start of the season, compete in the AAAA league and potentially represent Zone 2 at provincials.

2. The league schedules may begin during the second week of December.

3. VARSITY teams play on MONDAY & WEDNESDAY JUNIOR VARSITY teams play on TUESDAY & THURSDAY The order of play will be girls followed by the boys. Additional nights may be added at the discretion of the convenor.

4. Girls’ games will begin at 6:00 pm. Boys’ games will begin at 7:30 pm. *All games involving Steinbach, home will start @ 6:00pm with the second game starting @ 7:30pm. Steinbach away games will begin @ 6:30pm with the second game starting @ 8:00pm. Steinbach games in Winkler begin at 7:00 pm (girls) and 8:30 pm (boys).

5. Schedule changes will be made only under exceptional circumstances and must be made by mutual consent of the teams concerned. Once the change is agreed upon, the team requesting the change must contact the convener so referees can be contacted.

6. If at all possible, games should be avoided during exam week.

7. Varsity and Junior Varsity games will consist of four ten-minute quarters. Changed in 2009 after MHSAA AGM, and subsequent vote at the October 2009 SCAC meeting.

8. Varsity league play-offs will be completed one week prior to the Provincial Regional Tournament. Junior Varsity play-offs will be completed one week prior to the Provincial Tournament.

1. All varsity and junior varsity teams qualify for the play-offs. 2. PLAY-OFF FORMATS

Five Team League The 5th place team during the regular season will play at the home of the 4th place team in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, the winner of the 4th vs. 5th game will play at the home of the 1st place team and the 3rd place team will play at the home of the 2nd place team. The winners of the semi-final games will play at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs.

Six Team League The 1st and 2nd place teams during the regular season will get a bye into the semi-finals. In the quarterfinals, the 6th place team will play at the home of the 3rd place team and the 5th place team will play at the home of the 4th place team. In the semi-finals, the winner of the 4th vs. 5th game will play at the home of the 1st place team and the winner of the 3rd vs. 6th game will play at the home of the 2nd place team. The winners of the semi-final games will play at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs.

Seven Team League – agreed to at the November 2006 SCAC Meeting The 1st place team during the regular season will get a bye into the semi-finals. In the quarterfinals, the 7th place team will play at the home of the 2nd place team, the 3rd place team will play at the home of the 6th place team, and the 4th place team will play at the home of the 5th place team. In the semifinals, the winner of the 4th vs. 5th game will play at the home of the 1st place team during the regular season, and the winner of the 2nd vs. 7th and 3rd vs. 6th games will play at the home of the highest seeded team prior to the start of the play-offs. The winners of the semi-final games will play at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs.

Ten Team League The 1st through 6th place teams get byes into the quarterfinals. In the first round of the play-offs, the 10th place team during the regular season will play at the home of the 7th place team, and the 9th place team will play at the home of the 8th place team. In the quarterfinals, the winner of the 9th vs. 8th game will play at the home of the 1st place finisher during the regular season, the winner of the 10th vs. 7th game will play at the home of the 2nd place finisher, the 6th place finisher will play at the home of the 3rd place finisher, and the 5th place finisher will play at the home of the 4th place finisher. In the semifinals, the winner of the 9th/8th vs. 1st game will play the winner of the 5th vs. 4th game at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs. The winner of the 10th/7th vs. 2nd game will play the winner of the 6th vs. 3rd game at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs. The winners of the semi-final games will play at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs.

Eleven Team League– agreed to at the November 2006 SCAC Meeting The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place teams will get byes into the quarterfinals. In the first round of the play-offs, the 11th place team during the regular season will play at the home of the 6th place team, the 10th place team will play at the home of the 7th place team, and the 9th place team will play at the home of the 8th place team. In the quarterfinals, the winner of the 8th vs. 9th game will play at the home of the 1st place team, the winner of the 7th vs. 10th game will play at the home of the 2nd place team, the winner of the 6th vs. 11th game will play at the home of the 3rd place team, and the 5th place team will play at the home of the 4th place team. In the semifinals, the winner of the 4th vs. 5th game will play the winner of the 1st vs. 8th/9th game at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs. The winner of the 2nd vs. 7th/10th game will play the winner of the 3rd vs. 6th/11th game at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs. The winners of the semi-final games will play at the home of the team seeded highest prior to the play-offs.

** In the event of multiple games at one site another venue may have to be chosen at the discretion of the convenor. ** College Louis-Riel’s varsity boys’ basketball team and Steinbach Regional secondary School’s varsity girls’ basketball team will be excluding themselves from the AAA play- offs during the 2008-2009 season. Their regular season standings will count. However, in the play-offs the will be removed and teams may be moved up a position in the standings.

3. All play-off games are single games.

4. Ties – Approved at SCAC Meeting (November 9, 2006)

Ties for overall regular season standings will be broken based on the following format: 1. Won-loss records, counting only games between the teams that are tied. 2. Lowest total points against in games between the teams that are tied. 3. Lowest total points against in games against all common opponents. D. MINOR OFFICIALS

Scorekeepers, time and 24 second clock keepers are to be provided by the home team at all league and play-off games. (Shot clocks will be used for both junior varsity and varsity during the 2006- 2007 season)

E. PROTESTS

All protests must be submitted to the basketball convener in writing within 48 hours of the game being protested.

F. ELIGIBILITY

Schools are responsible for registering their players with the MHSAA.

G. UNIFORMS

All players must dress in school colors. Uniforms must meet the MHSAA standards.

H. ENTRIES

Schools must submit to the convener their intent to participate by the first week in December.

I. OFFICIAL GAME BALL

All schools will use the MHSAA sanctioned ball (Wilson Evolution) for league and play-off games.

J. SCORESHEETS

All schools will use the sanctioned zone 2 score sheet.

Each home team is responsible for e-mailing results and sending/faxing the score sheets to the convener the following day.

Each home team is responsible for reporting the results to the newspapers.

K. RULES OF THE GAME

FIBA rules will be in effect starting 2007. More information on FIBA, including rules books are online at; http://fiba.basketballmanitoba.ca .

In Zone 2 league play any player disqualified from a game because of a flagrant foul will have an automatic one game suspension.

2. All uniforms must be numbered 1-99, (whole numbers). (MHSAA recommends 1-15)

3. Amendment to the “mercy rule”, as decided @ the November SCAC, 2005 meeting:

“ In the second half of a basketball game, a team losing by a difference of 30 points or more may request to have the “mercy rule” applied. In this case the clock will run for the remainder of that game. Once the mercy rule has been applied it cannot be retracted or repealed – regardless of point spread (difference).”

4. MHSAA “AAA” and “AAAA” playing rules for basketball state that “Students may not compete in more than three games at the varsity level. (league, exhibition or tournament – tournaments count as two games).

L. SUPERVISION

1. As per each member school’s Divisional Policy.
