SIMCO (School Improvement and Modernization Council) Minutes – October 9, 2012 Meeting

Members in attendance: Marybeth Brown, Hallie Brown, Bill Clute, Bethany Killeen, Max McGhee, Lisa Reece, Kate Soter , Kathi McCollumn

Data Review: The council reviewed work done by PCS teachers over the month of September on reviewing the past 5 years of data – MCAS, Aimsweb, DRA, writing prompts. Council members were shown grade level conclusions and implications for instruction.

Library: Thanks to Lisa Reece and a small group of volunteers, a great deal of time has been put into getting the school library up and running. Lisa obtained 20+ volunteers to staff the library, which is set to open on October 15th. Thank you Lisa!

School Improvement Plan: Sections of the School Improvement Plan that pertain to the Council were reviewed. Future meetings will include discussion and planning for these items:  Goal 3 – Community Relations: B. Design and implement format for parents to volunteer skills as a educational resources C. Successful implementation of:  Career day for 7th/8th graders  Invite senior citizens to become involved in student learning, such as pen pals, center volunteers, etc.  Acquisition and development of effective community ‘media liason’ to submit regularly to local newspapers regarding PCS events.  Advertise upcoming events and newsletter to Senior Center, open invitation to attend events. Invite senior citizens to join SIMCO

 Goal 5 – Facility and Resources: A1. Hands on science materials list maintained. Sign-out procedure established. A2. Book room available multiple copies list maintained A3. Begin cataloging collections of social studies/geography materials in building. A4. Stronger advocacy of 'Giving Tree' in lobby requesting classroom materials donations from parents. Put notice at Senior Center and Town Library. A5. Implementation of parent grant writer program to search for available funds for teacher requested materials, programs and equipment. Next Meeting: November 13th, 4-5pm: Agenda – the above School Improvement Plan goals – your homework – think about them!
