Gender Multimedia Project
We have spent a few weeks discussing the ideas behind feminism and gender identity. Now we will take the next step in crafting our argument by utilizing the media sources to discuss some form of impact on gender. Several focuses are plausible, but each group is afforded the opportunity to form their argument about the impact of media on gender (any form of media). The following are ideas that may be incorporated into an argument: Misogynistic views in rap music toward women Commercials and the impact on gender Education or schooling system and its impact on gender Television and stereotyping the gender roles or breaking the stereotypes Politics and gender Gender and eating disorders and their influences Transgender challenges incorporated by pop culture Empowering or oppressing homosexuality through controlling gender stereotypes Bullying and the expectations of gender Gender and Athletics Expectations of Success for Gender Ever Challenging Ideas about Masculinity created by Media Men and Childrearing
In groups of four students will present a gender-based argument about the effects of gender identity based upon media. These students will present an argument and construct their visual delivery in the same manner that they would develop their essay. These students will set up a lesson/argument in which their fellow classmates will be required to engage in discussion and rebuttal.
Purpose: To inform classmates of gender identity issues within the constructs of society in a meaningful and engaging manner.
Delivering the argument: This can be done by whichever means the students deem necessary as long as it falls within the lines of propriety. Video/Still Pictures/Surveys/Activities should be used in an effective manner. Sometimes enacting a skit or using audience participation to provide a visual aid will help comprehension of the argument. Find a creative means in which to deliver the argument, the evidence (multimedia), and warrants in order to help fellow classmates with comprehension of the group’s ideas. By any means that you deliver the argument, students presenting must engage their classmates in discussion of the content in order to allow for agreements and rebuttals. Find a way to have classmates discuss and work with the content to allow comprehension to be more effective. In delivering the information, students can use PowerPoint, video clips, handouts, pictures with captions, etc. Any creative means is at the disposal of the presenters. The presenters are the teachers—the authority on the argument and its content.
