A Few Narrative Ideas (More to come as needed…)
Choose a moment or a few related moments from your past to use as a story telling vehicle. Remember that your purpose is to convey something about who you are and what makes you unique. What is your true character and how is your voice and your experience unique?
Life Lessons o What is the most significant personal event in your life? o What is the greatest challenge you have ever faced? o What has been your most important achievement? Consider achievements that would not show up on a traditional resume. o Looking back on your ten year old self, what do you see? How are you the same as you were then? What event from the past could you explore with fresh eyes? o Tell a story about a time(s) when you stepped willingly out of your comfort zone, or a time when you were forced to face an unexpected change or routine.
Role Models o Who are the people who have had the greatest influence on your life? Consider your family and people outside of your family. o What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? o Who is the most important NON-school teacher in your life? Think about a person who was not assigned the role of teacher or mentor, maybe someone who you did not think would teach you- maybe you did not even realize it at the time. o Who would you most like to meet and why? Tell a story that relates to the connection you feel with this person. Consider characters from literature, writers, scientists, political figures, or any person whose approach to life inspires you.
Philosophy / Inspiration o What invention would you most like to develop? o What is your biggest hope for the world? Tell a story that relates to this hope. Avoid clichés. o What is your favorite piece of music and why? o What activities bring out the best in you, why? o What is the most spiritual place you have ever visited and why? o If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? o What is your most important non-academic interest and why? o What is the most important class you have ever taken? Is there a subject that inspires you intellectually? Tell the story of your inspiration.
