ICT summit planning meeting 1 19 17 PGA, Jerry Schoen, Carol Will, BJ Roche, Traci Hess
“Technology for All” Summit will be March 24, with a Career Networking Event on the evening of March 23.
Career Networking Event March 23: - Held in Cape Cod Lounge of Student Union. - Hours Tentatively 7-9 PM, but we can change that if we want to get students there earlier. - Working with Career services to organize this and to recruit businesses. Plan is to have 15 tables or so, staffed by businesses and/or UMass alums discussing how careers are evolving in their field. We may have some brief talks by invited presenters, interspersed with networking time wherein students visit the different tables. - Current (tentative) lineup of presenters so far (these may also speak on the 24th): Eli Schiff, web design critic; Franz Strasser, BBC; Ria Baily-Galvis, Google International & Government Relations office. - Note: Jerry will send around to Steering Committee a list of recent (<5 years) IT Minor graduates by major. SC members are asked to review list, ID past students who might be good participants at Networking Event or at the Summit itself. Communicate these to Jerry.
Technology for All Summit March 24: - Held in Campus Center Auditorium, all day (9 or 10-4?) - Save the Date announcement has gone out. We will be sending out individual requests to present for people we’ve discussed in recent meetings (i.e. 5 college people working on various technologies). Still looking for more suggestions. In addition to the Excel list of possible technologies, projects & discussion topics that Jerry sent around recently, some new ideas have been brought up. Your help in following these leads is appreciated: Gaming. Social Media (ethics of). Ethical use of media. Fake News. Snapchat Spectacles. Traci suggested getting someone to talk about forensics. - Technology Education Concepts is bringing a good deal of equipment and handouts, and possibly presenters from companies they work with (Edibon was one mentioned). Their list of goodies: several Roland 3D printers and milling machines, a laser engraver/cutter, vinyl cutters for graphic creation Architectural and Landscape Design software with Virtual Reality headset for viewing, handheld 3D scanners. mechanical design CAD software, and literature (and possibly parts) for other technologies such as CNC routers, plasma cutters, 3D printed electronics, metal additive 3D printing, hybrid 3D printing, and classroom trainers for electrical, computer, civil, environmental, mechanical, chemical, HVAC, food processing and other engineering disciplines, including cybersecurity for smart grid applications. - We’ll also have presentations and panel discussions on information technology across the disciplines, likely including speakers from the networking event on the 23d. - The schedule will include several panel discussions or talks, interspersed with intervals when participants can see various technologies at booths spread around the room. - We want to attract a good mix of students, faculty and staff from the 5 colleges. We will also invite area high schools to attend. - We may do a 3d printing design competition, wherein students produce designs that would be printed at the summit – or in advance. Significant logistical details to be worked out on this. We’re communicating with Technology Education Concepts and with UMass Digital Media Lab about this. - We are working on food arrangements. There should be lunch – possibly also breakfast and snacks – for those who register by a deadline TBD. We’ll need a strategy to cap the total # of people getting fed.
To Do: - Carol will find out about the Open Access fair – when it will be held. - Send out a Call for presenters - BJ will look into an alum who does social media and tech stuff for the Celtics. Would be good for the 23d networking event. - Jerry will send around to Steering Committee a list of recent (<5 years) IT Minor graduates by major. SC members are asked to review list, ID past students who might be good participants at Networking Event or at the Summit itself. Communicate these to Jerry.
