SCCS AP Biology Name: Chapters 1-3 Take-Home Free Response Questions

Instructions  Read each question carefully and circle all parts of the questions that you need to answer.  Outline your answer quickly and briefly before writing your final response.  Write out your final answer in blue or black ink on lined notebook paper. You only need to turn in your final answer, not your outline.  Think about the assumptions of many scientists that replace Biblical wisdom and counsel. Answer the questions in a way that addresses these assumptions without compromising your faith.  You may use your text and your own notes, but keep in mind that you will not be able to do so during the AP Exam. So, work toward being able to complete FRQ’s without your notes. For the AP Exam, you will have about 45 minutes total in which to answer two questions such as these.

1. The unique properties (characteristics) of water make life possible on Earth. Select TWO properties of water and:

a. for each property, identify and define the property and explain it in terms of the physical/chemical nature of water.

b. for each property, describe one example of how the property affects the functioning of living organisms.

2. After an enzyme is mixed with its substrate, the amount of product formed is determined at 10-second intervals for 1 minute. Data from this experiment are shown below:

Time (sec) 0 10 20 30 40 50 60

Product formed 0.00 0.25 0.50 0.70 0.80 0.85 0.85 (mg)

Draw a graph of these data and answer the following questions.

a. What is the initial rate of this enzymatic reaction?

b. What is the rate after 50 seconds? Why is it different from the initial rate?

c. What would be the effect on product formation if the enzyme where heated to a temperature of 100° C for 10 minutes before repeating the experiment? Why?

d. How might altering the substrate concentration affect the rate of the reaction? Why?

e. How might altering the pH affect the rate of the reaction? Why?
