Re: Committee Assignments 2017-18

Committees and other assignments at the Carey Business School are designed to provide input on policy and guidance for the School. Below are listed the major standing and ad hoc faculty committees assigned by the Dean’s Office. Charges for Carey committees are given below. This document also records faculty assignments to JHU committees, but those charges are not listed here.

STANDING COMMITTEES Admissions Committee Reviews all files (full-time, part-time, certificate, and second degree applicants) applying for admission to the Carey Business School. The Carey Admissions Committee is formed by the Dean on an annual basis and this entity has the authority to admit or deny an applicant. All decisions are final.

Curriculum Committee Reviews and approves new courses, changes in course credit hours, course titles, and other matters related to specific courses in the academic degree programs.

Curriculum Subcommittees Works with umbrella Curriculum Committee to review new courses, determine sequencing of courses in the curriculum, changes in credit hours, course titles, and other matters related to specific academic degree programs. Approves courses for specific degree program concentrations.

Diversity and Inclusion Committee Works in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins Diversity Leadership Council (DLC). The leadership of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee has faculty and staff co-chairs, and meets monthly to engage Carey faculty, staff and students around issues of diversity and inclusion and especially to build community. The D&IC, along with other divisional and school councils, meets 1-2 times annually with the Hopkins DLC as a member of the consortium of divisional leadership councils.

Faculty Engagement Committee Works with faculty to help identify and assess opportunities for innovation and as well as bring to light shared challenges, while providing a forum for problem-solving within the faculty. This working group collaborates with the Dean’s Office and Management Council in helping to foster engagement and continuously improve the faculty work experience and environment.

Honor Council Responsible for hearing and adjudicating reports of violation of academic honesty and conduct issues. The Council is also responsible for upholding school and university values and policies.

Library E-Resources Acquisition Committee The committee assesses e-database and e-journal needs and priorities for the school, and makes recommendations to the library about resources to acquire or discontinue.

Grade Appeals Committee Reviews student grade appeals, if a student wishes to bring an appeal to a higher level after appealing their grade to the instructor. The committee will investigate and make a determination of the remedy, if warranted.

Student Development Faculty Advisory Committee Advises and consults with the Associate Dean of Student Development and Student Development Directors on ways to increase student learning, improve student life outside the classroom, and increase interactions among students and faculty. Included for discussion are topics such as Academic Advising, Career Development, and Student Organizations.

Teaching & Learning Faculty Advisory Committee Advises the Vice Dean for Faculty & Research on processes and best practices related to teaching and learning. These include faculty development and support, online education, policy development, and classroom technology.

SPECIAL COMMITTEES/TASK FORCES AACSB Faculty Qualifications Committee Advises the Vice Dean of Faculty & Research and the Vice Dean of Education on matters pertaining to how faculty are classified into one of the four categories specified by the AACSB: Scholarly Academic, Practice Academic, Scholarly Practitioner, and Instructional Practitioner.

Business in Government Initiative Committee Works with faculty lead to refine and solidify vision for the Business in Government (BIG) Initiative. Seeks feedback from and consensus among other Carey faculty for the vision, and assists in implementation. Brokers connections with other individuals across the Hopkins community and/or within government.

Faculty Diversity Initiative Action Plan Committee Advises the Dean on continued progress relating to Carey’s Faculty Diversity Initiative Action Plan, as overseen by the Provost’s Office. This includes a divisional self-assessment, divisional goals, and divisional strategies to achieve faculty diversity goals.

GMBA Program Implementation Committee Provides recommendations for implementation of the recently redesigned GMBA curriculum. This includes reviewing new course titles, discussing how best to design and implement the new I4H format, as well as other planned curricular changes. In addition, the committee will explore opportunities for enhanced student engagement through co-curricular activities.

Strategic IT Committee Reviews the overall strategic IT needs for the school and the needs associated with research done by faculty.
