MISS MISKIMMIN’S LESSON PLANS FOR WEEKS OF 11/27, 12/04, 12/11, and 12/18:

The following are the standards that will be targeted throughout this unit. 1. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text (CC1.3.8.A) 2. Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision (CC.1.3.8.C) 3. Analyze the influence of the words and phrases in a text including figurative and connotative meanings; and how they shape meaning and tone (CC.1.3.8.F) 4. Analyze the extent to which a filmed or live production of a story or drama stays faithful to or departs from the text or script, evaluating the choices made by directors or actors (CC.1.3.8.G) 5. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade-level reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies and tools. 6. Demonstrate a grade-appropriate command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling (CC.1.4.8.F)

Tuesday, 11/28: Materials: A Christmas Carol, vocab sheets, reader’s response entries 1. Record obligations for the week 2. Explain A Christmas Carol unit as far as expectations, schedule, and assignments 3. Distribute reader response entries and vocabulary list for this unit 4. Intro to Victorian Era

Wednesday, 11/29: Materials: A Christmas Carol, vocab sheets, reader’s response entries 1. Finish intro to Victorian Era jobs 2. Review of literary elements: characterization, tone, mood, exposition, and setting 3. Charles Dickens research 4. Victorian England research

Thursday, 11/30: Materials: A Christmas Carol, vocab sheets, planner, notebook, reader’s response entries 1. Finish any final discussion pieces from the research component 2. View a brief clip of A Christmas Carol to understand setting and mood of the novel 3. Begin Stave 1: read pages 1-12 (ending top of p. 13) 4. Assignment: a. Begin taking notes for Stave 1 i. Describe the chambers where Scrooge lives. ii. What does Scrooge see in the knocker on the door? iii. Marley’s description. iv. Why does Scrooge “doubt his senses?” v. What is the fate of the spirit? vi. What is the significance of Marley’s chains? vii. What does Marley mean by “business?” viii. Why does Scrooge see the Phantoms? ix. Is there any evidence of change by the end of the first stave? b. Reader’s Response Entry #1 c. Study for Stave 1 Quiz plus vocab on Wednesday, 12/06

Tuesday, 12/05: Materials: A Christmas Carol, notebook, reader’s response entry 1. Finish discussion of Stave 1 2. Begin Stave 2 3. Assignment: The following assignments are due by Thursday at the beginning of class at the latest: a. Finish reading Stave 2. b. Take notes on the following including page numbers. Some of these may have been completed in class: i. Description of first ghost ii. What do we learn about Scrooge’s home life? iii. Who is Fan? Why is her character significant? iv. Describe Scrooge’s relationship with Fezziwig. v. Compare Fezziwig as an employer to Scrooge. vi. Why did Scrooge’s relationship with Belle fail? vii. List the 5 regrets that Scrooge reveals during Stave 2. c. Reader response entry #3 d. Study for Stave 1 quiz plus vocab.

Wednesday, 12/06: Materials: A Christmas Carol, notebook, response entry, stave 1 quiz 1. Quiz on Stave 1 2. Finish work for Stave 2 3. Assignment: a. Study for Staves 2-3 quiz plus vocab on Wednesday, 12/13. b. Finish any of the assignments from Tuesday if you have not already done so.

Thursday, 12/07: Materials: A Christmas Carol, notebook, response entry 1. Discussion of Stave 2 2. Assignment: a. Study for Staves 2-3 quiz plus vocab on Wednesday, 12/13. Friday, 12/08: Materials: A Christmas Carol, notebook, response entry 1. Finish discussion of Stave 2 2. Begin reading and taking notes on Stave 3 (p.51-68 finishing at the top of page 69). 3. Assignment: b. Read pgs. 51-68 (finishing at the top of p. 69) in Stave 3. The following assignments will be checked on Tuesday, 12/12: c. Take notes on the following including page numbers. Some of these may have been completed in class: i. Description of second ghost ii. Description of Tiny Tim iii. How do Mr. and Mrs. Cratchit respond to “The Founder of the Feast,” Scrooge? iv. What conclusions can you draw about the Cratchit family? v. Compare Bob Cratchit and Scrooge’s nephew, Fred. vi. How does Scrooge feel after seeing his nephew’s Christmas festivities? vii. Thursday, 12/21: Materials: A Christmas Carol, notebook, response entry 1. Discuss dramatic license and critique. 2. Discuss similarities and differences from the play and the text. 3. Students will work on a formal critique for the written text versus the play version.

Friday, 12/22: Materials: A Christmas Carol, notebook, response entry, critiques 1. Finish critique 2. Discuss differing opinions based on the two versions of the play
