2. The Structure of the paper:

Paragraph 1 – Introduction: (3-5 sentences)

 Ease us into the topic by writing a sentence that orients us to the idea that Racism has existed and still exists today.  Identify both TKAM and The Help and works of fiction that deal with racism in American society – but in different ways.  End the paragraph with a thesis statement that sums up the main point you want to make in this essay which is to show how the issue of racism has changed from the 1930s through the 1960s to present time.

Paragraph 2 – focus on TKAM

 Use a topic sentence which identifies the novel of To Kill A Mockingbird as a novel by Harper Lee which is set in the 1930s in Alabama.  Identify some specific examples of racism in the book.

Paragraph 3 – focus on The Help

 Use a topic sentence which identifies the movie of The Help as a work of fiction by Kathryn Stockett which is set in 1963 in Mississippi.  Identify some specific examples of racism in the movie.  Explain how these are similar to or different from the racism in TKAM.

Paragraph 4 – focus on Now

 Use a topic sentence which explains that some issues of racism have been eliminated but some have not.  Identify some specific examples of racism in today’s society. If you can give your own personal example of racism that you have witnessed or experience, please consider doing so.  Explain how today’s racism is similar to or different from the racism of the 1930s and 1960s.

Paragraph 5 – Conclusion

 Draw some personal conclusions about the evolution of racism as shown in these works.  Make a personal statement sharing your thoughts about where we are today.
