This segment of the creative arts curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Cross Content/Workplace readiness: 1,2,3,4
I. Course Description: Interested in fashion? Want to know how color, fabric, and design can enhance and change figure proportions? Fashion Design is a continuation of using basic sewing skills and commercial patterns to create something totally your own. Use knowledge of fashion design and clothing construction to make better decisions when purchasing clothes. II. Course Objectives: A. To introduce the students to areas of the psychology of clothing, textiles, and careers, with a focus on the individual’s beliefs, attitudes and goals related to clothing. B. To further an awareness of different aspects of the fashion scenes, including color analysis, investment dressing, designer ready-to-wear and video merchandising. C. To further the development of a creative approach to clothing construction and appreciation of its aesthetic contribution to daily life. D. To further the students’ ability in selecting suitable pattern sizes and styles. E. To develop high standards and follow efficient procedures in the construction of clothing. F. To recognize the instruction sheet as a valuable tool of garment construction and strive to master its intricacies. G. To encourage the awareness of new sewing procedures and recognize higher standards of workmanship as a goal.
H. To help students become increasingly knowledgeable concerning the properties of textile fabrics, associate these properties with certain expectations in use, and develop a sense of appropriateness of fabrics to various purposes.
