Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse Balanced Assessment (from AVID – One-Pager Literature Activity) Objectives:  to help students visualize what they are reading (TEKS 7.10 D; 7.10 L)  to help students choose meaningful quotes from their reading (TEK 7.11 C)  to help students write a thoughtful response to their reading (TEKS 7.11 A,B; 7.17)

Directions: Choose one of the poems from the novel. Choose two meaningful, significant quotes from the poem. Create a graphic representation of the quotes. Write a response to the quotes (4-5 sentences).

Follow these directions for your “one-pager”:  use one page of unlined white paper  include the author and title of the book and also the title of the poem  must have two meaningful, significant quotes – include page numbers  must have a graphic representation (picture)  must have a personal response (short paragraph)  response paragraph can be about theme, character development, conflicts, setting, tone, literary devices, figurative language  response is NOT a summary, review or paraphrase  response is commentary – should be written in third person; (no use of you or I)  fill the entire page  use color  no pencil – use pen and colored pencils or markers  put your name and class period in the lower right hand corner
