The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. The Pledge was recited.

Mr. Gula introduced Ben Jiang and Holly Wang who are here from China as part of our sister school relationship with Jining Affiliated Middle School in Jining, China . CANTON CELEBRATES

The Board of Education along with Superintendent Case and Principal Gula recognized the following students, staff, and community members for their service and dedication to Canton High School: Sam Adler-Bell, Bo Burditt, Melissa Bradley, Sylvia Doyle, Jared Grande, Derek Miller, Ashley Lusky, Katie Sodaro, Christian Plourd, John Burditt, Nick DelVecchio, Rachel Pepin, Matt Setzler, Gina Lopardo, Emily Hartzell, Paige Nelson, Trevor Pierce, Tyler Smith, Dan O’Brien, Brian Magna, Michael Cahill, Katie Bussiere, Jackson FitzGerald, Austin Lomibao, Dan O’Brien, Jeff Boratko, Wesley Nichols, Brad Parliman, Nancy Grace and Sara Beaudin.

The meeting recessed from 7:37 p.m., to 7:59 p.m.

Student Representative Report

A written report was distributed to the Board detailing the activities at the High School during the past two weeks and upcoming activities. Katie and Frances briefly discussed AP testing, the spring concert, the progress of spring sports, the upcoming Powder Puff football game, senior mastery projects and the proms. Business Manager Report

Mr. Domanico briefly reviewed the Financial Report for the period ending April 2008. He provided general month end figures for the Whitsons Food Service Program for the month of April.

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education accept the Financial Report for the period ending April 2008. Rhea/White U

The Financial Report will be forwarded to Board of Finance members on Friday, May 9th.

Superintendent Report

Mr. Case thanked the Board for their support of his recent trip to China. A full presentation of this trip will be at the Board meeting of May 14th.

Mr. Case informed the Board that several students from each of our schools will have their artwork displayed at the Shoppes in Canton beginning Saturday, May 17th.

He then reported that Canton Middle School was being considered for the prestigious award from the Connecticut Association of Schools as Connecticut Middle School of the Year. A committee will be at the school on Monday, May 12th. Mr. Case thanked Patti White and the Facilities Committee for their efforts on the school grounds to prepare for the committee review.

Mr. Case provided a brief review of his recently held Superintendent Advisory Council meeting. He informed the Board that there are presently 24 members consisting of teachers, parents, community members and administrators. He expressed that this committee was a positive vehicle for communication. The further stated that the short term goal was to revisit the mission and vision statement.

Mr. Case also informed the Board on his recent activities with the Canton Public Library and new legislation regarding Sheff vs O’Neil.

The Board was asked to review their calendars for the week of August 18, 2008. A Board retreat would be scheduled.

Chair Report

Chair Daniels reviewed Town Meeting voting procedures with Board members.

Mr. Daniels asked Board members to participate in the Memorial Day Parade. He informed the Board that Dr. Grossman will be the speaker this year. Further information will follow. Mr. Daniels informed the Board members that a meeting regarding fields was held. Handouts and a discussion will be held at the meeting of May 14th.

Mr. Daniels also asked all Board members to plan on walking at the graduation ceremony and led a discussion on Honorary Diplomas. It was decided that Joni Bahre would receive an Honorary Diploma and that her family would accept it for her.

Committee Reports

Facilities/Fields

Patti White briefly spoke on the possibility of renting football fields for home games. Further discussion will be held at another Board meeting.

Mrs. White informed the Board that the space study was completed. The report concluded that the High School facility could hold another grade. Superintendent Case will review the data provided and bring his recommendation back to the Board.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS Policy

Susan Crowe briefly reviewed Policy #3513.2 Waste Management, Resource Conservation and Recycling and Policy #7230 Energy – Conserving Construction with the Board. These two policies will be brought to the Board for action on May 14, 2008. Susan also spoke to the Board regarding a policy on staff driving private vehicles that will be discussed by Committee and brought to the Board at a later date.

Susan Crowe informed the Board of the actions that have been taken to communicate the school budget and the upcoming Town Vote.

There was a brief discussion on the timetable of future newsletters.

Late Start Committee

Leslie Hill spoke to the Board on the activities of the meeting held on May 7. A survey is being developed and should be available by May 26th with results back in early June. The next scheduled meeting is June 16th.

Negotiations Committee

A discussion will be held in Executive Session.

Minutes MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education adopt the minutes for the meeting of April 10, 2008 as presented. Rhea/Hill U Personnel – Resignation

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education accept with regret the resignation notification of Stephen Civitello effective June 30, 2008.

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education accept with regret the retirement notification of Drusilla McNeil effective June 30, 2008.

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education accept with regret the resignation notification of Karyn Roberts effective June 30, 2008.

Donations

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education accept the generous donations from Mr. Ken Jones.

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education go into Executive Session at 9:25 p.m. and invite Superintendent Case, Ms. McMullin and Mr. Domanico to remain for the purpose of personnel discussion.
