St John’s CE Primary School Year 1 Curriculum Fact Sheet Autumn 1 2016 This gives you some information about some of the work your children will be involved in during this half term. It would be very difficult to detail everything so we have just included those topics which we feel are the most relevant and those in which you could support your child’s learning. English This half term we will be focusing on stories with repeating patterns including:  ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’  ‘We’re Going on a Lion Hunt’

Children will learn to:  Use a full stop and a capital letter correctly  Write using finger spaces between words  Write labels and lists

Maths This half term the children will concentrate on:  Counting to 20 both forwards and backwards  Using a number line to add and subtract numbers up to 20  Ordering numbers and amounts  Using ‘ordinal’ numbers e.g. first, second, third  Simple shapes (circle, square etc)

Topic Throughout this unit, children will be learning about the four seasons (Spring, ‘Whatever the Summer, Autumn and Winter) and how they are different. They will learn simple links to each season e.g. we have Christmas in Winter. Children will also learn how the Weather!’ weather changes throughout our seasons. In addition, children will learn about everyday materials and their properties.

Art: Children will be looking at different ways to create pictures this term including using chalks, different fabrics and papers, finger painting and computer programmes.

DT: Children will be designing their own welly boots for a rainy day. RE and PSHE RE: Children will be focussing on how the world was made and the life of Jesus.

PSHE: Children will be focussing on keeping safe around school, outside and on the internet. They will also be looking at feelings and how others feel.

Computing Children will be using a range of technology:  Children will begin to use a keyboard to type simple sentences  Children will be learning to log on by themselves  Children will be learning to use a mouse to move, point and click in various programmes

Year 1 :

 Remember homework goes home every Friday and must be returned by Wednesday.  Make sure your reading book is in our box in school every day.  Don’t forget to read your reading book. If you read anything else – magazines, comics, Library books, web pages) remember to get someone to write it into your reading record as it all counts!  P.E is on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, please bring a full PE kit – white tshirt, black shorts and black pumps which are all LABELLED with your child’s full name.
