To facilitate the process, she 28 asked her students three questions: What do you do if you are 29 being bullied? What should you do if you see someone being 30 bullied? How do you find the courage to do the right thing?; and 31 32 Whereas, the students’ solution was to write a play titled When 33 You See Something, Say Something. Ultimately, they wrote two 34 plays, one for elementary school and another for middle and high 35 school, in which they invoke the assistance of McGruff the Crime 36 Dog to teach students what they need to know about bullying; and 37 38 Whereas, through their play, the Beaufort High thespians have 39 been successful in getting people talking about bullying and in 40 empowering students so that “when they see something, they say 41 something” to the right people. Mrs. Fess enlarges: “Our goal is to 42 encourage bystanders to speak up when they see something,

[4605] 2 1 inspire the victims to report bullying and show them how to handle 2 it, and give students tools to use if they find themselves in a 3 situation where they are bullied”; and 4 5 Whereas, now in its second year of production, this play “where 6 actions speak louder than words” has been presented to several 7 Beaufort County School District schools, as well as the Beaufort 8 Regional Chamber of Commerce, Hilton Head High School’s 9 ninthgrade academy, Riverview Charter School, South Carolina 10 and North Carolina Rotary conventions, and the Beaufort Water 11 Festival. In May 2014, it will be performed for a Rotary 12 convention in Baltimore, Maryland; and 13 14 Whereas, supported by Rotary of the Low Country (which wrote a 15 grant this year to purchase the class a new set and sound system), 16 the players also receive strong backing from Beaufort County 17 School District Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Moss and Beaufort 18 High Principal Corey Murphy. Dr. Dan Durbin, former Beaufort 19 High principal, and Dr. Valerie Truesdale, former district 20 superintendent, also have been highly supportive of this endeavor; 21 and 22 23 Whereas, delighted to hear that on February 6, 2014, the Beaufort 24 High School Drama IV class members will present When You See 25 Something, Say Something in the State House theater, the House of 26 Representatives takes great pleasure in welcoming them to 27 Columbia and the State House. The members of the House join in 28 saluting these talented young people for their praiseworthy 29 accomplishments and in wishing them continued success in the 30 days to comeor, to use the proper terminology, break a leg, 31 Beaufort High thespians! Now, therefore, 32 33 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 34 35 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 36 by this resolution, commend Beaufort High School, its drama 37 students, and drama teacher LaRaine Fess for its original 38 production of When You See Something, Say Something, an 39 imaginative play with a positive, lifechanging antibullying 40 message. 41

[4605] 3 1 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 2 Principal Corey Murphy and Mrs. LaRaine Fess of Beaufort High 3 School. 4 XX 5
