CUSTODIAN JOB DESCRIPTION – UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF KENT
The church custodian is “the caretaker of God’s house” – responsible for the overall cleanliness of the building and the appropriate set-up of rooms for the many activities that take place in the facility. The custodian is an integral member of the church staff and represents the church in many contacts with the hundreds of individuals who come in and out of the building each week. This a full-time position, with the following responsibilities:
Floor cleaning – Vacuum carpets weekly, or more often if necessary, and maintain the tile floors and synthetic gymnasium floor. Vinyl tile floors should be stripped and waxed annually, and buffed periodically. The custodian has special machinery to use for the tile floors and for the gym floor, and for doing deep cleaning of the carpets. A special process is also required in the kitchen.
Surface cleaning -- Dust or wipe clean the various tables and other surfaces in the building on a weekly basis, or more often if needed.
Rest rooms – Thoroughly clean rest rooms weekly, or more often as needed, and keep rest rooms stocked with soap, towels, and toilet paper
Trash removal – Remove trash from all rooms weekly. Pick up trash that ends up in the church yard.
Windows – clean all windows annually, and do spot cleaning, especially on doorways, as needed.
Preschool area – Preschool classrooms need to be cleaned twice weekly – once between Sunday morning and Tuesday morning, and once between Thursday and Sunday
Kitchen assistance – Run the dishwasher for the kitchen crew after Tuesday and Thursday luncheons
Room set-up -- Set up and tear down tables and chairs or other equipment as needed during the week for various building activities. Put out flowers and 8:30 Communion trays for Sunday worship.
Sidewalks – Sweep sidewalks and entryways. Remove snow throughout the winter from all sidewalks and entryways using the church snowblower or shovel; apply salt as needed.
Repairs – report any needed repairs or light bulb outages to the Tuesday work group.
Special needs – respond to groups in the building who may need building-related assistance
Security – Lock up the building daily, turning off all lights; open up and lock up Sundays
HOURS: 40 hours per week, including Saturdays and 2-3 hours Sunday morning. Hours on Monday-Friday are to be afternoon to evening, with a day and a half off each week. Hours may necessarily flex each week depending on the building schedule.
REMUNERATION: $12 per hour, plus individual hospitalization and a pension plan, and two weeks’ vacation plus ten paid holidays. Extra pay for extra hours for weddings or outside groups.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must have cleaning experience and the ability to operate cleaning machinery. Must be able to lift heavy tables and chairs. Must be able to express the Christian witness and care of the church in interactions with church members and the public.
