FIRST NATIONS EDUCATOR

Position Profile: Reporting directly to the Superintendent of Education, the First Nations Educator is responsible to assist staff in the areas of Treaty Education, FN culture and language and historical perspectives from the First Nation point of view.

Directly Reports To: Superintendent of Education

Required Education, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:  Knowledge of First Nations and Metis Culture  This position requires travel to various schools, therefore a reliable vehicle and driver’s license is required

Required Skills and Abilities:  Ability to work independently  Ability to maintain strict confidentiality relative to school division operations  A positive and professional approach  Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation and provide reports to the Superintendent of Education  Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions  Working knowledge of current technology and software associated with the duties and responsibilities of this position

Supervision of Staff: This position does not involve the supervision of other staff

Duties and Responsibilities: Without restricting the generality of the purpose above, First Nations Educator shall perform such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned including but not restricted to the following:  Provide enhanced First Nations cultural perspectives, awareness and guidance to students and schools staff  Visit K to 12 classrooms to support teachers to actualize the First Nations and Metis outcomes and indicators embedded in the Saskatchewan curriculum documents  Using the documents built by SECPSD to collaborate with teachers and offer supports for Treaty and First Nation and Metis content

Job Description: First Nations Educator Page 1 of 2  Educate students and staff on Treaties, the band, various levels of governance and traditional and current ways of life for the First Nations  Assist in sharing traditional First Nation ways of knowing across the division  Conduct classroom and school-wide presentation  Speaking to students and staff about personal experiences  Conduct field trips to the Medicine Wheel and Sundance Lodge on Pheasant Rump Reservation  Complete a list of resource people schools can access to meet the First Nations and Metis outcomes and indicators  HUB???  Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to a professional learning environment  Other duties as required by the Superintendent of Education

Judgment, Independence and Client Contact: Confidentiality At no time should a First Nations Educator discuss in public, information pertaining to a student or school. A First Nations Educatore is expected to respect the confidential nature of the position by avoiding discussion about any topics that are not formally communicated to the public by the administration of the school. A breach of confidentiality in this regard is a serious violation of acceptable professional conduct.

Independence The First Nations Educator is expected to work independently as well as a team member of schools-based staff and the school division.

Client/Peer Contact This position involves working collegially with other support staff, teachers, the division staff and school-based administration on a daily basis in support of the goals of the school.

Responsibility for Quality of Assigned Work: The employee is under direct supervision and is responsible to achieve the quality of work as assigned by the supervisor.
