Required materials o The Language of Literature by McDougal Littell o A folder and notebook used for English only o A pencil, black or blue ink pen, red pen, highlighter o 1 ½” Binder o 100 page composition book o Student planner

-Various short stories, poetry, and nonfiction -To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee -The Odyssey by Homer -Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare -The Road – by Cormac McCarthy -A Separate Peace - by John Knowles -Antigone – by Sophocles -Short research paper

We will be using the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop Level D. There will be quizzes over each unit, tests over combined units and a final comprehensive test over the entire book.

Grammar study, writing workshops, and other writing activities will be incorporated within our literature units to improve skills with language and composition.

Classroom Expectations o Be seated at your desk when the bell rings. o Be prepared for each class day with all necessary materials: books, pens/pencils, and completed homework. o Keep the area around your desk clean. o Show respect to your classmates and your teachers. o Use language appropriate for the classroom o Complete homework on time, contribute to classroom discussion, and listen to others’ points of view. o Bring your planner to class and record assignments in it. Grading Grades are weighted as follows:

Projects – 35% Tests – 30% Quizzes – 20% Homework – 15%

Grades will be posted regularly at the Family Access link within the Skyward program found at the Brandon Valley High School website: www.brandonvalley.k12.sd.us.

Late Work & Cheating As a general rule, completed assignments will be accepted one day late for ½ credit (50%). Any assignments turned in over one day late will earn less than 50%, determined by the teacher’s discretion for factors including, but not limited to, number of days late, reason for lateness, quality and/or length of late work, alignment to directions, and history of late work. When you know you will be gone for an excused absence, you must talk to me before your absence to make up work.

Cheating and/or plagiarism will be handled according to the student handbook.
