LECTORS - THIS WEEK 16/02/2014 SPECIAL MINISTERS A great challenge for any reform movement is whether it is faithful to its vision. Reformers are often 6.00pm (SAT) – B Nadenboush & G Canavan E Krygger & N Ziino viewed as troublemakers and disturbers of the established social order. They provoke tension and 9.00am (SUN) – M Crupi & G Tempone T Forte, G Calvi & R Mercuri division. Sometimes communities are splintered into opposing factions. Each faction believes that it 10.30am (SUN) – T Nguyen & V De Leo J Frangiosa, M Mizzi & S Dakin alone is truly faithful to the traditions. Reformers are sometimes shunned or excommunicated as renegades and traitors. St Paul himself was a zealous persecutor of the first Christian before being LECTORS – NEXT WEEK 23/02/2014 SPECIAL MINISTERS won over by the Risen Jesus. 6.00pm (SAT) - Sr T Fitzsimmons & E Krygger J Pullicino & E Saliba Matthew’s Jewish Christian communities faced such tensions. Could they be faithful to their Mosaic 9.00am (SUN) – G Calvi & R Fatto M Piscioneri, G Calvi & D Biasibetti Tradition and yet remain Christian? Matthew’s converted Jews had to explain that their Founder did 10.30am (SUN) – J & J Kearney J Iaria, L De Marco & T Nguyen not come to destroy their Mosaic tradition. He was not a destroyer of tradition. However, his teachings had a radical twist that went beyond the boundaries of what the Law required, they went right into the human heart. 17/02/2014 A Sinopoli, F Nardozza, I Manini & R Comito MONEY COUNTERS Matthew’s portrait of Jesus delivering the Sermon on the Mount parallels Moses delivering the Law 24/02/2014 E Claridge, F Carabott & G Canavan from Mount Sinai. He wanted to show that Jesus is the new Moses, who came to bring tradition to the perfection that God had intended. YOUR PRAYERS ARE REQUESTED FOR THE FOLLOWING Reforms and renewal are always necessary for any community to survive and to thrive. Otherwise, a RECENTLY DECEASED community will simply fold up and die. A community is truly blessed when real prophets of change Concetta BUTTERA, Maria ROPERTO, Tullio FANTIN and reform emerge in its midst. They often appear in times of crises when there is an experience of loss of direction. Those who passionately believe in remaining faithful to unchanging tradition run ANNIVERSARIES the risk of becoming disconnected from the ever changing patterns of life. Vincenzo DE LUISE, Mary CARUANA, Emmanuel CALLEJA, Gaetano CARUSO, True, not all changes are necessarily good. Wise discernment in the rush of rapid change is Giuseppe & Teresa CARUSO, Antonia & Antonio GRAHOR, Laura & Pasquale MARIANI, necessary. Otherwise, the community can become irrelevant to the present and frozen in the past. Lorenzo & Rachele PACELLA, Gina DI DONATO, Antonio COSTANZA, Pope Francis will canonise both Pope John XXIII and Pope John-Paul II. It’s a powerful symbolic Antonio & Beniamino PASCUZZI, Tonino NAPOLETANO, Carmela LASPINA, act. The two popes could not be in greater contrast. John XXIII is seen as one who believed changes Vito, Santina & Rosario BARBAGALLO, Santo MUSUMEI are necessary in order to be faithful to our Tradition. John-Paul II was more conservative. He was convinced of the danger of straying too far from tradition. What Pope Francis says is that we need both. We need changes and reforms in the Church in order to keep tradition alive. At the same time, we must be faithful to tradition. The process of change contains elements of continuity and discontinuity. Prophets of reform in the Church are signs of God’s fidelity to us. Jesus promises he will be faithful to the Church till the end of time. Like him, they will suffer for their mission. They are asked to walk the path Jesus walked, and to share his suffering, with love and trust of God.
