Deadline: September 15, 2011 Website: http://www.gf.org/about-the-foundation/the-fellowship/ Description: Guggenheim Fellowships are awarded to selected individuals for a (minimum of six months) and a (maximum of twelve months.) The average amount of Fellowship grants in the 2008 United States and Canada competition was approximately $43,200. Often characterized as "midcareer" awards, Guggenheim Fellowships are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. These (two-year fellowships) are awarded annually to 118 researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field. Candidates must be nominated by department heads or other senior researchers. Direct applications are not accepted. More than one candidate from a department may be nominated, but no more than three. Deadline: September 15, 2011 Website: http://www.siwi.org/stockholmwaterprize/nominate Description: The Stockholm Water Prize is the world’s most prestigious prize for outstanding achievement in water-related activities. Any activity which contributes broadly to the availability, conservation and protection of the world’s water resources, and to improved water conditions which contribute to the health of the planet’s inhabitants and ecosystems, is eligible to be nominated. The activities can be within the fields of education and awareness raising, human and international relations, research, water management or water-related local activities. FUKOKA PRIZE The Fukoka Asian Culture Prizes Internal tracking: Please inform Brenda Carrier if you are planning to nominate a candidate or submit an application. Deadline: September 30, 2011 Website: http://www.asianmonth.com/prize/english/about/index.html Description: The Fukuoka Prize was established to honor outstanding achievements by individuals or groups/organizations in preserving and creating the unique and diverse cultures of Asia. Recipients are honoured for their outstanding contributions to academia, arts, and culture.

THE FUKOKA ACADEMIC PRIZE honours outstanding achievements in the field of Asian studies such as social and human sciences, contributing to the world’s understanding of Asia, and whose great contributions are expected in the future. The prize value is 3 million yen.

THE FUKOKA ARTS & CULTURE PRIZE honours recipients for their outstanding contributions in the cultivation and/or advancement of the unique and diverse arts and culture of Asia, covering a wide range of fields including fine arts, literature, music, drama, dance, film, architecture, traditional and ethnic culture. Prize value: 3 million yen.

THE FUKOKA GRAND PRIZE is presented to an individual or an organization in either the field of academics or arts and culture. The laureate must have made outstanding contributions to the preservation and creation of Asian unique and diverse cultures. Prize value: 5 million yen.

THE CANADA GAIRDNER GLOBAL HEALTH AWARD. The Canada Gairdner Global Health Award is directed at health issues pertaining to developing countries. It recognizes those who have made major scientific advances in any one of four areas; namely basic science, clinical science or population or environmental health. These advances must have, or have potential to make a significant impact on health outcomes in the developing world. Nominations for leadership and administration however outstanding, do not fall within the parameters of this award. CAD $100,000.

CANADA GAIRDNER INTERNATIONAL AWARD. The Foundation's aim is to honour and reward outstanding biomedical scientists who have made original contributions to medicine with the ultimate goal of contributing through research to the conquest of disease and relief of human suffering. The Foundation invites the scientific community to nominate qualified scientists from every branch of biomedicine. CAD $100,000. CANADA GAIRDNER WIGHTMAN AWARD. A special annual award will be given to a Canadian who, in the opinion of the Foundation, has demonstrated outstanding leadership in medicine and medical science consistent with the purpose of the Foundation. CAD $100,000.

TRUDEAU FELLOWSHIPS The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Research Area(s): Arts & Humanities UBC Internal Deadline for Potential Candidates: October 14, 2011 Website: http://www.trudeaufoundation.ca/program/fellowships Description: Every year the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation selects up-to five Fellows who have set themselves apart through their research achievements, creativity and social commitment. The Foundation does not accept direct applications for these prizes. The Office of the V.P. Research & International will have an opportunity to forward candidates on UBC’s behalf. The Trudeau Fellowships are of a total value of $225,000 and Fellows are appointed for a mandate of three years.

Documents required by October 14:  Two page summary of candidates strengths based on the Trudeau Fellowship criteria: leadership,  productivity, reputation, communication and involvement.  An updated CV

THE HARVEY PRIZE Technion – Israel Institute of Technology Internal tracking: Please inform Brenda Carrier if you are planning to nominate a candidate or submit an application. Deadline: November 1, 2011 Website: http://www.admin.technion.ac.il/harvey/ Description: The Harvey Prize is awarded annually in a variety of disciplines within the categories of Science & Technology and Human Health. The prize has also been awarded for Contribution to Peace in the Middle East. The 2011 award cycle will offer two prizes in Science and Technology. Harvey Prize winners are selected by a council of world-renowned scientists and experts in each field through a rigorous selection process. The award is sponsored by Technion’s Institute of Technology, Israel's premier technological university for both teaching and research. Deadline: December 1, 2011 Website: http://www.rsc.ca/nominations_fellows.php Description: “Fellows shall be persons whose intellectual achievements have been exceptional through a body of publications, intellectual endeavors or creative activities exhibiting original contributions in the arts, humanities or sciences, as well as in public life. At the time of their election they shall be Canadian citizens or have been Canadian residents for the past three years. Election to the Society is the highest honour that can be attained by scholars, artists and scientists in Canada”. Research Area(s): Multiple

Deadline: December 1, 2011 Website: http://www.rsc.ca/awards_rscawards.php Description: To attain its objectives, RSC recognizes excellence as well as outstanding achievements and contributions to knowledge, research and innovation in Canada by awarding medals and prizes. RSC has traditionally administered endowed and sponsored awards, generally named to honour past Fellows. These awards are not limited to Fellows and are open to any candidate for achievements in either or both official languages in a wide spectrum of disciplines: in Science and Technology, in the Social Sciences, and in the Humanities. Twenty-one Society awards are offered on an annual or biennial basis and consist of either medals or scrolls, some of them with cash prizes. Research Area(s): Multiple
