Ms. Brewer’s 7th Grade Reading/Language Arts Syllabus 2009-2010
Welcome to 7th Grade Reading. We will cover not only reading, but spelling, vocabulary, and literature this year. Please review the syllabus for your responsibilities. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at [email protected], OR leave a detailed message with the school at 681- 7846 and I will contact you as soon as possible. I look forward to a wonderful year with you!
Class Objective The objective of this course is to fulfill the requirements set forth by the Alabama Department of Education and the Blount County Board of Education. Why Read? It has been statistically proven that students who read 20 - 40 minutes daily significantly improve their reading scores on standardized tests. While this is important, I also want students to love to read. Homework nightly is to read their AR (Accelerated Reader) or other material for at least 20 or more minutes. Classroom Materials 1 ½ ” 3-Ring binder 1 pack of 5 Index dividers for 3 ring binder Loose-Leaf paper college or wide ruled Pencils & pens for daily work $5.00 classroom donation. These funds will be used for items such as classroom supplies/books or equipment. Make checks payable to LFHS. Bring any 2 items for classroom use: paper towels, tissues, hand sanitizer, 13 gallon garbage bags, or black dry erase markers. Donations are always appreciated: We are always in need of paper towels, hand sanitizer, manual pencil sharpeners, staplers, tissues, copy paper, printer ink, flash or thumb drives, pencils, pens, loose-leaf paper, copy paper, etc.
*** It is your responsibility to bring materials to class each day and keep your notebook organized and up-to-date. Grading Scale and Policies
Grading will be calculated using a point system. Tests/quizzes/projects/essays = 50% of your grade. Daily/Homework assignments = 25%, and A. R. = 25%. A.R. consists of reading library books and novels, passing tests and accumulating a certain number of points in relation to your STAR reading level. STAR reading level tests are given 3 times per year. Your goal is to be reading at your grade level, 7.0, or higher, improving to at least an 8.0 by the end of 7th grade. Homework is to read your AR book nightly for at least 20 minutes. Students are responsible for keeping up with their own AR testing and points. Turn to back for more information
Books Students will sign for text books and must be responsible for their return at the end of the year in good condition.
Technology: Technology is a vital part of today’s world and students will have the opportunity to complete assignments and projects using a computer throughout the year. Crisis Plan: In the event of a tornado, fire, or other emergency situation, the teacher will follow the standard procedures noted by the Blount County Code of Conduct and the school.
Absences & Make-Up Work: You are encouraged to attend all class sessions, as each class contains vital information. If your absence is excused, consult a friend in class or consult with me to find out what to make up. ISS (in school suspension) students must turn in assignments for credit. Extra Credit/Extra Help Throughout the semester opportunities will occur where you will be able to earn extra credit. Any student requesting extra help should make an appointment with me. Tutoring will be available.
Classroom Rules 1. Students will show respect for each other and all property. 2. Students will follow instructions when given. 3. Students will follow rules in the school handbook. 4. Remain seated in assigned seats at all times unless properly excused.
