ATTENTION: Entertainment and Arts Editors FINALISTS announced for the 2015 Alberta Film & Television (Rosie) Awards
Wednesday, April 22, 2015 – The Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA) is excited to announce the finalists for the 41st annual Alberta Film & Television Awards, celebrating excellence and outstanding achievement in Alberta film, television and new media.
A record 788 class and craft entries were submitted (up 42% from last year). This year seventy-five industry professionals from across Canada adjudicated the submissions; in total 375 productions were submitted for consideration. This is sixty-two more (an increase of 19.8%) than in 2014.
These productions, from commercials, new media, and both long and short form fiction and non-fiction are vying for 25 Class awards. In addition, Alberta’s talented screenwriters, costume and production designers, cinematographers, editors, directors, make-up artists, special effects artists, sound technicians and composers (totalling 184 finalists) are competing in 33 Craft categories. Each winner receives the prestigious Rosie Award.
Of the finalists, 200 are from productions based in Calgary, while 113 are from Edmonton-based productions. There were also seven from Red Deer and one each from Grande Cache, Medicine Hat and Water Valley. Some Edmonton productions used Calgary talent as did Calgary productions employ Edmonton talent. This should be kept in mind when comparing the breakdown.
The Calgary production company with the most nominations is Nomadic Pictures, which produced or co-produced 24 nominations. Corkscrew Media / Stir Films came in second with 15 nominations, and Joe Media Group had the third most number of nominations, with 12.
The Edmonton company with the most nominations is Aquila Productions, with 12. Tied for the second most nominations are Prairie Dog Film + Television and the National Film Board of Canada, with 9 each.
The individual production with the most number of nominations is “Blackstone,” from Prairie Dog Film + Television, with 9 nominations. Two productions came in with 8 nominations each; One Night in Aberdeen (GREEN Productions) and Naughty to Nice (National Film Board of Canada).
The 2015 Alberta Film & Television Awards will take place at a gala evening presentation on Saturday, May 23 at the SHAW Conference Centre in downtown Edmonton. The host for the evening will be Donovan Workun, a founding member of the wildly successful Atomic Improv Co.
In order to qualify for an Alberta Film & Television Award a production must be at least co-produced by an Alberta production company. For any craftsperson to be eligible he or she must have been a resident of Alberta for the 2014 calendar year.
