Message from Chaand Nagpaul, Chair of the GPC. New BMA campaign – ‘Your GP Cares’ This campaign, to highlight the pressures in general practice, is now live! The BMA will be launching a full suite of campaign materials, including posters and leaflets, at the LMC conference on 22nd/23rd May. These will explain the campaign issues to patients. The launch plans involve media publicity, launch of webpages and social media activity. There are also plans in the coming months to engage politicians, policy makers and patients further in the campaign, along with GPs themselves. More details to follow. The success of ‘Your GP cares’ is heavily dependent on GP support. Now the campaign has launched can we please ask you to:  join the campaign via the BMA website www.bma.org.uk/YourGPcares 2  help raise awareness of the campaign with your colleagues and contacts

 engage with the campaign on Twitter using #YourGPcares and following the BMA

@TheBMA if you are active on social media

 if you have further case studies to illustrate the issues the campaign is highlighting

please email them to [email protected]

 join in the conversation on BMA communities

However, so that you have access to something now, there are two posters that you can download from the website and can start using straight away if you so wish.

Tender for Sexual Health services for 2015. Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council will competitively tender for a delivery partner(s) for sexual health services during 2014/15 in order to secure improved public health outcomes. It is estimated that contracts will start 01/04/15. We anticipate that the tender documents will be available on YORTender for potential bidders to download from 01/08/2014, although timescales are currently subject to change. The commissioning intentions will be posted on YORTender in the next few days. This information is issued solely for the purposes of conducting soft market testing. The Council may be interested in meeting with organisations with experience of delivering the services included and anticipate holding some supplier events that interested parties may wish to attend. It is recommended that potential providers register on the YORTender website as the procurement process will be through this system. https://www.yortender.co.uk/procontract/portal.nsf/vLiveDocs/SD-DEVV-6UGE9Y? Monitoring of Bariatric Patients

The LMC are in contact with Louise Parsons (Lead Nurse) in the Bariatric department regarding clear discharge protocols for follow up care of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery. They confess that the current discharge protocols lack clarity and they are now being discussed by the multi disciplinary team. Once it has been established what the workload will be for primary care, we can commence negotiations with the CCG.

GPC representative for SY&B

I would like to express my thanks again for the votes I received from my GP colleagues in the recent ballot for the GPC representative for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. I will be taking up my position in July. (Just to clarify, this does not affect my role as the LMC Medical Secretary for Doncaster, rather, my attendance at the monthly GPC meetings will strengthen 3 my knowledge and negotiating skills, and thus enable me to continue to serve the GPs of Doncaster to the best of my ability). I am always happy to hear from any GP who has issues which they feel need to be aired at the GPC.

Our current GPC representative, Dr Trish Edney, will be standing down in June. Doncaster LMC would like to extend our grateful thanks to Trish who has travelled across from Sheffield for our monthly Monday evening LMC meeting on a very regular basis, and has provided us with very useful feedback and guidance on national debates and guidances.

Smoke Cessation service update

We understand from a recent meeting with SWYFT, that they are planning to open town centre premises at the end of June, (The Quit Stop, 40 Scot Lane, Doncaster). This will provide a service for walk in patients, referrals and booked appointments. Plans are that it will open 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, 10 am to 2 pm Saturday, and some evening sessions for face to face consultations. There will also be a central telephone hub 8 am to 9pm 7 days a week. GP Practices should all be in receipt of vouchers and a list of participating pharmacies. A new service specification should be issued at the end of June. It is not yet clear who will prescribe Champix and the LMC are currently in negotiations with SWYFT.

Bowel scope screening programme for 55 yr olds

The SYLMC Liaison group met with Dr Stuart Riley, Gastro-enterologist at Sheffield, to hear about the bowel scope screening programme for 55 year olds, which is due to be rolled out across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw later this year. It will dovetail with the existing bowel screening programme for the over 60s and in the longer term will be nurse led. Patients aged 55 will be picked off the Exeter System and sent an invitation for a one off flexible sigmoidoscopy. If the patient declines, they can opt in up to the age of 60, when there is automatic progression to the FOB screening. We are advised that there will be minimal issues for primary care, mainly patients asking GPs whether they should accept the test offer. Further details will be sent out in due course.

Patient Participation DES

We are advised that 35% of Doncaster practices failed to achieve the Patient Participation DES, and only 57% of practices across SY&B met all the elements. This appears to be due to the absence of an end of year report. As you know, DES payments are sequential for each component and must be met before the next component can be paid, with a final published report which includes all elements. The Area Team have taken the stance that where a 4 report has not been published by 31 March, payment will not be paid, irrelevant of whether components 1-5 have been met.

We would strongly recommend that ALL practices affected by this non payment request an appeal as soon as possible

Vacc and Imms Update

Recording vaccinations Practitioners are reminded to record the brand as well as the batch number on the patient’s clinical record. This information should also be clearly documented (against each vaccine given) on the clinic list returned to the Child Health Records Department to ensure the child’s record can be accurately and completely updated. This is especially important where there is a choice of vaccine for that element of the programme.

Pertussis

Following a report last week on three infant deaths in the London area, we have received notification of a confirmed case of pertussis in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw in an infant, too young to be vaccinated born to woman who was not vaccinated. Whilst women are signposted to the GP by the Midwife at booking, practices should ensure that the offer of vaccination is documented in the woman’s clinical record.

Documents for information: DoH: Transforming Primary Care This document, issued by the Department of Health and NHS England, outlines a series of policies required to meet some of NHS England’s most significant challenges through developments in primary care provision. These include the challenges of an ageing population and to better service those living with complex health and care needs. Its initial focus is on primary care, with GPs having the opportunity to lead a transformation of care for vulnerable older people in the community. Discussions between the DCCG/LMC and GPs are taking place, to ascertain a local vision for primary care. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/plans-to-improve-primary-care Procurement Opportunities It is recommended that GPs register on the YORTender website to view procurement opportunities. https://www.yortender.co.uk/procontract/portal.nsf/vLiveDocs/SD-DEVV-6UGE9Y?
