PROGRAM for APRIL 26 th: Max Goldack introduced our guest speaker Dr. John Corlett from the University of Winnipeg, Professor in the Dept. of Kinesiology. He is the University’s VP Academic and Provost. His topic today was “Sport, Development and Peace”. His team has been working on a collaborative project in El Salvador with the children there: their aim is to work on reducing violence – all the prisons and laws haven’t worked to reduce the societal violence where gang culture and drug wars are the realities kids face there. Dr. Corlett compared El Salvador and Greater Toronto Area (GTA) who both have the same population – 6 million residents. El Salvador last year reported 4000 murders; GTA had 106 murders. The Civil War in El Salvador ended years ago at great cost; now peace is needed for the country to move forward. He described two forms of peace: “Negative Peace” – indifferent relations, no overt conflict; “Positive Peace” – genuinely harmonious relations. Dr. Corlett asked the question: How do we teach values and skills to achieve and maintain Positive Peace? - The project is for all the children to play, learn games and participate in fun sports - He showed slides of these various activities and how they work - Schools are the only sources to make these long-term changes 3 - ScotiaBank El Salvador is the major sponsor of this program – the bank saw the reason why attitudes needed to be changed. If nothing is done, the bank foresaw that the country would essentially disappear as a place to thrive and do business. Max thanked Dr. Corlett and wished the team well as they journey to El Salvador for one last trip shortly, as this 7-year project is ending May 31st, 2012.

The April 26th meeting adjourned at 1:30pm with God Save the Queen. 4
