From the Youth Pastor

Thankfully for most of the youth and some adults, one of the more difficult seasons of the year is coming to an end. Of course the season I am referring to is the standardized test season. Hearing about the preparation for, and the taking of the test this year has reminded me just how draining these tests can be on everyone involved. Recently the great Brent Beasley, pastor at Broadway Baptist, wrote a short story titled “The Pigs and the Scale.” It’s a simple story of a farmer who wanted his pigs to become big and fat. Of course not all pigs can grow to the same profitable size. In order to make sure he could get every pig to become the same profitable size “the farmer decided that the best thing to do to solve the problem would be to weigh them again and again throughout the year. So, the farmer invested a lot of his resources in weighing.” Unfortunately the more and more resources he threw into the weighing and its preparation, the less and less resources he had for the actual feeding of the pigs. In the end the wrongly placed emphasis on the weighing had left the farmer with smaller pigs than when he had started.

Thankfully the Church does not follow the example of the farmer. The Church’s primary goal will never be the weighing. The Church’s primary goal should always be the feeding. Sure there are lessons that can be learned from gauging many of the weighing processes, but in the end the greatest impact will always come from the food itself. Let us never forget to continually feed.
