1 Executive Summary
Disability Research on Independent Living and Learning (DRILL).
A report done by DRILL in Wales
This is a new 5 year plan across the whole of the UK.
We are given money to do this by the Big Lottery.
2 DRILL will work with
Disabled people.
Researchers (these are people who look for and get important information).
Decision makers (these are people who say what should happen).
3 This will help disabled people make choices about how they live.
4 DRILL will work with
Disability Wales.
Inclusion Scotland.
Disability Rights UK (England).
Disability Action (Northern Ireland).
5 This report is 1 of 4 from each nation.
Nation England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Independent living Helping disabled people to make choices about how they live.
6 DW's (Disability Wales) talked with members and others about the important things for disabled people.
These are shown in the Welsh Government’s ‘Framework for Action on Independent Living’ and DW’s current manifesto. A manifesto is a paper that says what someone wants to do.
3 DRILL meetings were held.
61 people took part.
The main aim was how DRILL can make the world a better place for disabled people.
7 Some things that are very important to disabled people.
The talks brought up 2 new important things:
Making sure we treat everyone the same.
Disabled people's rights and equality. (This means treating everyone the same).
Other important things were: Hate crime Poverty (this means having very little money) Changes to welfare (these are the things like money and help that you get from the government). Public service cuts (these are things that everyone uses that the government gives money to).
Help with legal needs.
Climate change. This means changes in the world’s weather that could cause flooding. 8 Individual Wellbeing
Wellbeing means being comfortable, healthy and happy.
Details are in the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014.
9 Disabled people should help us to get the important information we need.
A group of people from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales could look at what is right and wrong. They will make sure everyone is treated well and come to no harm.
DW thinks DRILL should look at welfare changes.
This might get TV, radio or newspapers to listen to what we have to say.
10 DRILL needs to show what has happened to the people who could have got ILF (Independent Living Fund) after it closed for new claims in 2010.
DRILL needs to look at the best way to help those people who still receive ILF.
