Barrett L. Austin, 20, died on April 21, 2013, in 23 Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was 24 attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device in Wardak 25 Province, Afghanistan on April 17; and 26 27 Whereas, upon receiving the news of their son’s serious medical 28 condition, his parents Yolanda and Curt Austin and his wife, 29 Heather, immediately flew to Germany to be with him in his final 30 hours; and 31 32 Whereas, Barrett was based at Fort Stewart in Georgia and was 33 attached to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry 34 Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division; and 35 36 Whereas, Dacusville and Pickens communities have lovingly 37 showed their support of Barrett and his family with yellow ribbons 38 and small American flags throughout the area; and 39 40 Whereas, Barrett grew up in Dacusville and graduated from 41 Pickens High School and attended Dacusville middle and 42 elementary schools; and

[652] 2 1 2 Whereas, he will always be remembered by his family, friends, 3 and this Senate as a courageous soldier who gave his life for his 4 country. Now, therefore, 5 6 Be it resolved by the Senate: 7 8 That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, express the 9 profound sorrow of the members of the South Carolina Senate 10 upon learning of the death of Private First Class Barrett Austin of 11 Easley and extend their deepest sympathy to his loving family and 12 many friends. 13 14 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 15 the family of Private First Class Barrett Austin. 16 XX 17
