JOHN BRANNEN

John Brannen was announced as Northern Kentucky University’s fifth men’s basketball head coach in program history by Director of Athletics Ken Bothof on April 6, 2015. And, in his first three years as head coach turned NKU into the preeminent team in the Horizon League. After leading NKU to the 2017 Horizon League Championship and subsequent berth into the NCAA Division I Tournament, the Norse followed with the 2018 Horizon League Regular-Season Championship and participated in the NIT. After posting a 9-21 record (5-13 Horizon League) in his debut season as head coach, Brannen en- gineered one of the fastest and best turnarounds in the country, leading the Norse to a 24-11 overall record and 12-6 mark in the Horizon League that resulted in a share of third-place during the 2017 regular-season. The Norse were plus-15 in the win column from the previous season, which was the third-best turnaround in the nation, trailing just UCLA and Minnesota. NKU then won three games in as many days to claim the Horizon League Tournament crown. Lavone Holland II, one of Brannen’s first recruits as head coach of the Norse, was named the Horizon League Tournament Most Valuable Player. Holland was joined on the all-tourney team by Drew Mc- Donald, who Brannen molded into a first-team all-Horizon League player as just a sophomore. The Horizon League Championship provided Northern Kentucky with its first berth in the NCAA 4TH SEASON Division I Championship, a remarkable feat considering it was the first season the Norse were eligible CAREER RECORD: 72-47 to compete in NCAA postseason competition following a four-year reclassification period. HC Northern Kentucky then posted a 22-10 mark in 2018, including a 15-3 mark in Horizon League HORIZON LEAGUE: 38-23 play that resulted in Northern Kentucky’s first regular-season title in any sport since reclassifying to ALMA MATER: MARSHALL (‘97) Division I in 2012-13. Combining the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, Brannen’s tutelage has turned the Norse into the Horizon League’s top team as Northern Kentucky posted a league-best 30-10 mark against league competition across the two seasons.
