EUGENE T. POLK SCIENCE FELLOWSHIPS AT GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK 2013 SUMMER INTERN ANNOUNCEMENT: ARCHEOLOGY PROGRAM NORTH/SOUTH RIMS

Short description: This internship will support Grand Canyon National Park’s Archeology Program by helping complete archeological surveys, compliance monitoring, and ruins preservation activities in the park. Projects could include a combination of the following; archeological site inventory survey, archeological site condition monitoring, monitoring park projects near archeological sites, hands-on stabilization, architectural documentation, data entry, report writing and file organization.

The 2013 Polk Intern will work as a crewmember along with other archeological technicians for the Cultural Resources Program. Field and office duties will be assigned for various projects throughout the summer. The duration of individual projects will vary.

Knowledge and Skills Required  Experience conducting archeological fieldwork and entering data into Microsoft Access databases; experience in the archeology of northern Arizona is a benefit.  Experience in use of Trimble or Garmin GPS units, digital cameras, geographic information systems (GIS) is a benefit.  Ability to read a topographic map and use a hand-held compass.  Skilled in hiking, orienteering, and backpacking in remote canyon settings.  Ability to work independently with little or no supervision during portions of the day and ability to work as part of a team for extended periods of time.

Additional Details  The internship duration is 10 weeks, completed between early June and mid-August.  The intern would be based on the South Rim and shared housing will be provided.  The intern must have a valid driver’s license to operate a government vehicle for work related tasks.  There will be a large amount of field work associated with this project – the intern should have extensive field experience in variable conditions, extensive camping / backcountry experience, and possess a willingness to work long hours.  The intern will be compensated $375 per week for the term of the internship.  Applications will be accepted through April 12th, 2013 and the position filled by April 26th. Duties will begin in early June.
