IV 1. Introduction

This document is intended as a support for the students of DIME Department Courses and contains the guidelines for formatting the thesis. The aim is to obtain a graphical homogeneity among the thesis of the DIME candidates. This template is written following the formatting rules and the related instructions are also described in an explicit way. It is a task of the supervisors to verify that the guidelines have been carefully respected by the candidates.

1.1. Thesis structure The thesis length should be between 30 and 50 pages in the case of Bachelor degree and maximum 150 pages in the case of Master degree. The page number is located at the bottom of the page, right aligned, or at the external side in case of both sides print. The pages before the introduction (except the front page) must be numbered with Roman numerals.

The scheme to be adopted is the following:  Front page (see template for the thesis of CL and CLM)  Title and abstract (in Italian)  Title and abstract (in English)  Acknowledgments (optional)  Contents (see previous model)  Introduction  Chapters describing the thesis activities  Conclusions  References  Nomenclature (see model)  Appendixes and annexes (optional)

1 2. Editing

2.1. Page format This document proposes a format able to allow an appropriate text density without reducing the readability. The page must have the following margins (adopted in the present document):  Top margin: 3 cm  Bottom margin: 3 cm  Left margin: 3,5 cm  Right margin: 2 cm

2.2. Font and dimensions The font to be used is Times New Roman (or equivalent). The text must be written with size 12, line spacing is single, paragraph is justified. The chapters’ titles must be written with size 18, bold and centered. After the chapter title leave two empty lines. The sections’ titles must be written with size 14, bold and left aligned, with a special hanging of 1 cm. They must be preceded by an empty line and followed by a space of 6 pt from the following text. The sub sections’ titles must be written with size 12, bold and left aligned, with a special hanging of 1.2 cm. They must be preceded by an empty line and followed by a space of 6 pt from the following text. Eventual sub sub sections’ titles must be written with size 12, left aligned, with a special hanging of 1.5 cm. They must be preceded by an empty line and followed by a space of 6 pt from the following text. For chapters, sections, sub sections and sub sub sections, the decimal numbering must be adopted. The footnotes1 must be written in Times New Roman font, size 10 pt and their numbering must start from 1 in any new chapter.

2.3. Equations, figures and tables

2 2.3.1. Equations The equations must be centered in the line and with a space of 6 pt from the text, before and after. They must be cited within the text numbered progressively, starting from 1 in any new chapter. The equation number must be reported close to the equation in the right margin, in round parentheses.

2.3.1.1. Equations explanation As an example, equation (2.1) can be explained:

2.3.2. Figures The figures must be inserted into the text, properly spaced from it before and after. They must be numbered progressively in the text, starting from 1 in any new chapter. They must be accompanied with a caption, posed after the figure and centered, written with size 12 pt, italics.

Each figure must be cited in the text using the following notation: Fig. 2.1.

2.3.3. Tables The tables must be inserted into the text, properly spaced from it before and after. They must be numbered progressively in the text, starting from 1 in any new chapter. They must be accompanied with a caption, posed before the table and centered, written with dsize 12 pt, italics.

Each table must be cited in the text using the following notation: Tab. 2.1.

2.4. References The references must be presented according to one of the following options.

2.4.1. Option A References must be reported at the end of the thesis (in a unique list for all the chapters). The references are cited in the text with a progressive number in brackets, and reported into the reference section in the same order (see the example). Reference numbering is unique for the thesis and not referred to the chapters (i.e., there is only one reference with number 1, one with number 2, etc). The journal papers must be cited as in [1], the conference proceeding papers as in [2] and the books as in [3]. References

2.4.2. Option B References must be reported at the end of the thesis (in a unique list for all the chapters). The references are cited in the text in parentheses with the surname of the first author (eventually followed by the surname of the second author or by the expression “et al.” in the case of more than two authors) and the year of publication. The references are reported into the reference section in alphabetic order, referring to the surname of the first author and ordered in chronological way in the case of more than one work of the same first author. The journal papers must be cited as in (Red et al, 2012), the conference proceeding papers as in (Green, 2013) and the books as in (Yallow and Violet, 2008).

2.5. Nomenclature and symbols The nomenclature should be reported at the end of the thesis, after the references and before any Appendixes or Annex (optional). As reported in the following example, notations, subscripts, definitions and acronyms should be reported in this order, with the relevant meaning. For each group, use the following order: numbers, lowercase letters, capital letters, lowercase Greek characters, capital Greek characters.
