Background Information about Musical Participants for New York City’s September 11th Commemoration Ceremony

The Bronx Arts Ensemble, founded in 1972, is dedicated to enriching the cultural environment of the Bronx with a year-round schedule of concerts, special programs for families and a full music-and-arts-in-education program for schools. BAE’s players are considered among the finest freelance musicians in New York. With the flexibility of performing as a small group or full symphony, the BAE presents 100 concerts annually that reach an audience of over 50,000.

The Brooklyn Philharmonic is regarded as one of the nation's premier music ensembles. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, the Philharmonic has played a leading role in the presentation of innovative and thematic programming, receiving 22 ASCAP Awards over the last 24 years for “Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music,” including First Prize in 2004. Since its inception, the Philharmonic has premiered over 150 works, including 60 commissions.

The Brooklyn Youth Chorus is a Grammy Award-winning music education institution that includes four progressively advanced performing ensembles. Founded in 1992 with a mission of helping young people from all backgrounds realize their potential as musicians, BYCA now stands as one of the country’s leading youth choruses and the only voice-based after- school music academy in New York City.

The Juilliard School, founded in 1905, is widely considered the nation's finest arts-education institution and has a long history of distinguished graduates. With a campus located in Lincoln Center, the school instructs nearly 800 undergraduates and graduate students each year in music, dance and drama. Juilliard's central mission is to educate talented performers so that they may achieve the highest artistic standards, as well as become leaders in their professions. Today’s performers are all graduate students in the Music Division of the school.

Musica de Camera, founded in 1979, provides a unique and essential forum for classical minority musicians, and helps develop an appreciation for the traditional classical repertoire as well as the works of lesser-known Hispanic composers. With a focus on exposing Hispanic and non-Hispanic audiences to the artistry of Puerto Rican and Hispanic composers and classical musicians, Musica de Camera presents several world premiere performances of new music each season at various venues in the City, in addition to master classes, lecture demonstrations and other school programs.

The Riverside Symphony, founded in 1980, is dedicated to developing an audience for classical music among people of all backgrounds, bringing attention to lesser-known music from all periods, and providing opportunities for emerging soloists of exceptional promise. Each year, the symphony performs a critically acclaimed concert series in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.

Livingston Taylor and Kate Taylor have both led long careers as respected musicians and performers. Mr. Taylor, who has toured with such major artists as Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett, Fleetwood Mac and Jethro Tull and recorded eleven albums, received the Boston Music Award for outstanding folk artist in 2988. He is currently Artist-in-Residence at Harvard University. Ms. Taylor, who began her music career at age of fifteen, recently she contributed her performance of the song "Satellite Sky" to the Grammy-nominated "Strong Hand of Love" album. Both Livingston and Kate are siblings of renowned folk artist James Taylor, whose song “Shed A Little Light” will be performed today by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus.

Frederick Zlotkin, winner of the International Music Competition at Geneva, is a soloist with numerous orchestras in America and abroad. A member of the Lyric Piano Quartet and Solo Cellist with the New York City Ballet for over 30 years, Zlotkin has appeared and received critical acclaim for performances with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln the New Jersey Symphony, among others.
