West 27 28 29 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 30 31 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 32 2/11/2004 House Introduced and adopted HJ-34 33 34 35 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 36 37 2/11/2004 38 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO COMMEND AMBASSADOR JOHN CARL WEST FOR HIS 12 MANY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE 13 PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND THIS NATION, AND 14 TO OFFER SOLEMN PRAYERS FOR OUR BELOVED 15 AMBASSADOR, FORMER GOVERNOR, AND FRIEND. 16 17 Whereas, Ambassador John Carl West was born on August 27, 18 1922, in Camden, South Carolina, the son of the late Shelton J. and 19 Mattie Ratterree West of Camden; and 20 21 Whereas, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from The 22 Citadel in 1942, graduated magna cum laude from the University 23 of South Carolina School of Law in 1948, and is a member of Phi 24 Beta Kappa; and 25 26 Whereas, Ambassador West married Lois Rhame of Camden on 27 August 29, 1942, and together they are the proud parents of three 28 children; and 29 30 Whereas, he is a World War II veteran; and 31 32 Whereas, he was a member of the South Carolina Senate from 33 1955 to 1966, served as Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina 34 from 1966 to 1971 and as Governor of South Carolina from 1971 35 to 1975; and 36 37 Whereas, in 1977 he was appointed United States Ambassador to 38 Saudi Arabia by former President Jimmy Carter; and 39 40 Whereas, it is with great sorrow that the members of the House of 41 Representatives have learned that Ambassador West is gravely ill,

Now, therefore, 3 4 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 5 6 That the members of the House of Representatives, by this 7 resolution, commend Ambassador John Carl West for his many 8 years of dedicated service to the people of South Carolina and this 9 nation, and offer our solemn prayers for our beloved Ambassador, 10 former Governor, and friend. 11 12 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 13 Ambassador and Mrs. John Carl West. 14 ----XX---- 15
