FASTPITCH Softball Little League Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the boundaries exist for Little League softball?
Your player must reside in – or go to a school that is located within – a predetermined set of boundaries addresses and schools located within these areas are included, as well as some south Ocoee and other addresses.
If your daughter lives outside of the stated boundaries, you may still able to play, however more information may be needed.
What are “League Age” and Divisions?
Girls are placed in a Division based upon their “League Age” (LA) which is determined by the year they were born (see chart below):
Birth Year League Age Softball Division 2004 12 Major 2005 11 Major 2006 10 Minor 2007 9 Minor 2008 8 Coach Pitch 2009 7 Coach Pitch 2010 6* Tball* (maybe softball) 2011 5 Tball Only (not softball)
*A League Age 6 year old may play Coach Pitch softball if they have played tball prior and then try out for Coach Pitch division during evaluations.
Can my 5 year old play coach pitch, even if they’ve played tball before?
Tball is specifically designed for and is safer for the younger players. A League Age 5 year old should play tball even if they’ve played before.
What are evaluations/tryouts?
Players attend an evaluation on a Saturday morning so coaches can assess their skills and evaluate them for placement on a team. The evaluation usually takes about an hour for each age division and typically consists of fielding ground balls, pop flies, batting, throwing and pitching for those in Minors/Majors.
How are teams formed? What is draft night? New teams are formed each season. The coaches meet together and take a turn selecting one player, each round, until all the teams are full or all girls have been selected in what is called draft night. All girls will be selected to a team and if a younger girl is drafted “up”, this is where it is done.
When are practices usually held?
Once teams are formed, each coach determines the best practice day/time for his/her team. The coaches select a day/time that works for them based on the available slots given via the league. Practices are typically held 1-2 times per week.
During pre season (a few weeks prior to start of season/games), practices can be held on any day of the week. Weekday practices can be held as early as 4:30 and as late as 7:30. Saturday practices are held throughout the day, and Sunday practices usually begin after church time. The coach determines the day/time for their team.
During regular season (once games begin), most practice days go away since games are being played on the fields those days. Therefore, most practice slots during regular season occur Friday eve, Sunday, or 4:30 during the week, based on coach preference.
Can I choose my daughter’s practice day/game times?
Due to the size of the league and since teams are formed and practices are not set until weeks after sign ups, it is impractical and nearly impossible to accommodate request for specific times.
How many games are played?
Once the season begins, there are typically 2 games played each week – one weekday game and a game on Saturday.
How many times are we at the softball fields each week?
Usually 2-3 times per week. Once games begin (regular season), 3 times a week is the norm, typically consisting of one practice each week, one weekday game, and one game on Saturday.
Where does softball play? Where are practices, games, and evaluations held?
Little League softball games can be played at a variety of fields, however the two main lighted softball fields are located in Windermere behind Windermere Elementary off of Maguire Rd. (11125 Park Ave, Windermere) and Bailey Park are where most of our activities are held.
On occasion, games may be played at another Little League field. For instance, if we interleague play with Dr Phillips Little League a very small portion of the games could be played at their fields as well. We are also involved with inter-district games. Depending on your child’s league, they may or may not be participating in this program.
What equipment/gear does my daughter need?
She will need her own glove and helmet. A bat is needed to bat, however, often times bats can be shared/borrowed. Good ideas, although not required include an infielder’s mask and cleats (non metal). What is included in the registration fee?
The cost for the season includes personalized uniforms, paid umpires, insurance coverage, field usage, batting cage usage, Opening Day carnival entry, etc..
What else is required for participation?
Little League is a volunteer league. Parents/guardians of players are expected to volunteer a small amount of their time to serve the league including, but not limited to, concession stand duty, field umpire duty etc. For more information: www.windermerell.org or [email protected]
