Puppy and Veterans Sweepstakes

Judge –Sonja Ostrom

The Sweepstakes events will begin the conformation portion of the Specialty. Puppy Sweepstakes will be Thursday morning, April 12 in the Madrid Ballroom. Veteran sweepstakes will follow in the afternoon.

Breeder’s Showcase

Event Co-Chair’s – Melinda Andric ([email protected] ) and Linda Robey ([email protected])

Judge –Sonja Ostrom

Looking back to the original intent of a specialty dog show, the committee felt it was important to spotlight the foundation of any breed, our stud dogs and brood bitches, as well as providing breeders a forum to showcase their hard work and progress they have made with their respective breeding programs. The first Breeder’s Showcase is for you, the breeder, and the committee, hopes you find this event very valuable. Also, the Parade of Champions and Titleholders will also be held in conjunction with the Breeders Showcase to further illustrate the versatility of this breed and to recognize the time and efforts and that BSCA members dedicate to these wonderful dogs.

The Classes we intend to highlight on this evening are in the Madrid Ballroom:

Stud Dog, Brood Bitch, and the all new Generations Class!

Generations Class: A Non-Regular Class to be judged on consistency in three generations of dogs. Dogs must be entered in a Regular Class with the Generations Class shown in ‘Additional Class’ portion of the entry form. Class will not be divided by sex. A bitch or a dog must be shown with a son or daughter and grandson or granddaughter. (Only ONE dog per generation for a total of three dogs shown, oldest to youngest.) Owner of the dog entered need not be the owner(s) of the son/daughter or grandchildren. Award will be based on the merits of the group. All dogs must be identified at the time of entry. A pedigree on the youngest dog in the group, with the other dogs being exhibited highlighted, must accompany entry.

Junior Showmanship Competition

5 Judge – Peri Norman

Juniors are the future of our breed and this very important competition will be the very first activity on Saturday morning, April 15. It will be held in the Madrid Ballroom and will be followed by the introduction of HIT winners, and then by the Best of Breed Specials Judging.

Best of Breed Competition

Judge – Skip Stanbridge

Conformation competition is the final event of the specialty and will start Friday morning, April 14 and finish with the awarding of the Best of Breed Title Saturday afternoon, April 15. All BOB judging will occur on carpet in the Madrid Ballroom. Class and veteran dogs will be judged Friday morning followed by class bitches and veteran bitches that afternoon. BOB specials judging will commence Saturday morning following Juniors and HIT recognition.

One of our really nice surprises is that Kutter (Ch Sandcastle’s Kutting Edge CDX HT) would like to start a new tradition for that elite club of National Specialty Best Of Breed Winners. Kutter is donating a $100 check to the BOB winner in 2006!! He hopes that this will continue in future years. Kutter is planning to be in Tulsa to present the check at the Awards Banquet, so all of you will be able to see our BOB winners from ‘05 and ‘06 together.

Another new twist for our BOB exhibitors is that the Bitch Specials will not be required to be at ring side until bitches are ready to be judged. This will eliminate having bitches ready at 9:00 and then not being judged until 1:00. Also, it will be less stressful in grooming time for those exhibitors who have both a dog and a bitch special.

Area Airport, Car Rental and Shuttle Services

17 Tulsa International Airport is 15 minutes from the host hotel. American Airlines, Northwest, United, Delta and Southwest along with a few others provide service to Tulsa. All major car rental companies are on site at the airport. Yellow Cab provides direct service to the hotel at special rates and has vans available for exhibitors with dogs and equipment.

Local Attractions

The host hotel is located in the middle of South Tulsa's shopping and entertainment hub. A wide variety of restaurants and stores are within walking distance or a very short drive. You can find any kind of food, at any price range, within blocks of the hotel. There is a new Super Target in front of the hotel. PETSMART, Sam’s, and Woodland Hills Mall (the largest mall in Oklahoma) are all very close. So if you forget anything, you can get it easily once you arrive.

April is the peak time for azaleas to bloom and 45 minutes away Muskogee has an annual Azalea Festival in its Honor Heights Park. Also, Woodward park in Tulsa typically has azaleas and tulips blooming too. Wooloroc Museum, about an hour northeast of Tulsa, is a great museum to see and there is a Tall Grass Prairie preserve in the same county that has a large buffalo herd and natural prairie for those who like to get back to nature. There are various links to many museums and other points of interest on the Specialty website.

Other Area Shows

For those of you who just can’t go to enough dog shows, you will be happy to know that you can stop in Wichita for their 3 day cluster April 7th, 8th, and 9th on the way to Tulsa. They also have a big agility trial, as well as other performance events. On the way home, you can stop in Grove, OK (about 70 miles Northeast of Tulsa) for the show on Sunday, April 16th. Onofrio is the Superintendent for both of these weekends. (Belgian Sheepdogs have been excluded from the Grove cluster shows on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15.)

Oklahoma Weather

The saying is, “if you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute because it will change”. April is a month of varying weather. The winds of March are subsiding and thunder storm season is starting. Extremes include hard freezes to the 80’s. Because spring time in Oklahoma is also synonymous with severe thunderstorms, the event committee has attempted to find as many indoor event venues as possible in an attempt to mitigate the potential disruption of specialty events due to severe weather
