Bananas, are a different kind of fruit that can’t be grown in America .The only reason we have bananas is because we purchase it from other places in the world. Bananas are mostly grown in South America, Mexico, and India. India is the top producer of Bananas.

The banana came to the Western hemisphere by the 16th century. The reason we can’t grow bananas here, is because the climate here is to hot. That’s why Americans didn’t know much about the banana. That changed in the late 1800s. Entrepreneurs began bringing bananas to the United States. The steamship got bananas to the U.S. faster then sailing ships. The railroad also helped, because it gave farther in land access to products that were only grown in the eastern cities. Then refrigeration was invented which allowed bananas to make it to the U.S. without becoming overripe.

The entrepreneurs worked hard to build American desire for bananas. They also encouraged growers to in the Caribbean and Central America to take risk to grow more bananas. The entrepreneurs eventually made companies that dominated the banana trade.

Fruit companies got so much power over some of the governments that the countries became known as “Banana Republic”. Although banana exports brought economic gain to these country’s primary export crop.

Entrepreneurs, technology, and cooperation of banana growing created a huge banana trade.
