UNITAS MALACOLOGICA STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS

Notes

The application form is in 3 sections.

Section A – Complete all questions. Give details of at least one person supplying a letter of recommendation (not more than two, one of whom must be the supervisor/research advisor). These letters should be sent independently (as e-mail attachments) by the person(s) supplying them.

Section B – The title should emphasise the core aspects of the research project to be undertaken. The project summary should succinctly indicate the subject and aims of the project.

Section C –. The ‘Project details’ (Item 6) must state the aims of the research project clearly and concisely, and should include background, research question, experimental approach, an outline timetable, expected outcomes and key references. This statement must not exceed two pages (single spacing, 12 pt). It should also explain why the research needs to be done and how it will benefit the field of malacology. The timetable should take into consideration the fact that awards will be normally be announced between July and August, and that the awards are made for components of the research taking up to 12 months. A report summarising the results of the work funded is to be submitted for publication in the UM newsletter by the end of the following year. We strongly favour self-contained projects, which are fully funded by the award, though the project may be a component of a broader research programme. Projects that have commercial applications are not eligible for funding.

Provide a brief account of your research experience and explain its relevance to the proposed research project. If you have any publications, these should be listed in reverse chronological order.

Provide a budget summary indicating which components are to be funded through your application. Individual awards will not exceed Euro 1,000. Normal budget items include supplies, expendable equipment and research-related travel. The awards cannot be used to cover salaries, institutional overheads, permanent equipment or conferences.

A brief CV should be included, indicating post-high school education, qualifications, awards, scholarships and employment history (if any).

NB: Applicants must be a member of Unitas Malacologica in good standing.

Completed application forms (as MS Word documents) should be sent to the UM Secretary (Dr Julia Sigwart: [email protected]) as e-mail attachments with the email subject UM Student Research Awards. The submission deadline is 15 May. UNITAS MALACOLOGICA STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS
