For you WHAT SYMBOL DOES JOHN EUDES USE TO EXPLAIN THE COOPERATION OF THE THREE PERSONS OF THE TRINITY IN THE MYSTERY OF THE INCARNATION? Please do not hesitate to ask us for information.

ANSWER

[Reply] Q. If the Father, Son and Holy Spirit cooperated together and equally in the formation of the body and in the creation of the soul, how is it that this body and soul remained united only to the Son and not to the Father and Holy Spirit? A. God wished it thus.

Q. Give me some comparison to help me understand it better. A. Imagine three men working together to make a beautiful robe. When it is finished, one of the three takes it and the two others help him to put it on. Thus, in the Incarnation, the three divine persons work together to form the sacred humanity and to unite it to the person of the Son of God, and thus he alone remains incarnate. “But this abundance attracted a band of thieves down on us. They tormented us all the winter of this year. It was one of our Sisters, our dear St. Francis Xavier who discovered their hideout. We had often heard the sound of footsteps, noises made, and we knew that things were disappearing, but we had not yet seen anyone. One evening as this dear Sister was taking the orphans back to the house where they were sleeping, which was at the end of the garden, she saw several men running and hiding behind the trees. The Mistress and the children were very much afraid and returned to the community to give the alarm. Several of our dear novices asked permission to go out into the garden, and armed themselves with big sticks. Arriving at a dilapidated house near to where our dear Magdalens were, they heard a lot of noise; they went in and saw these poor unfortunates getting away through a hole, which gave on to the street. Being certain that we would have nocturnal entries, we judged it necessary to have a guard during the night. A brave man rendered us this service for several months. Every day, for three months, we discovered traces of their visits. Fear made us often move and take our beds to where we believed we would be safer. Our good Mother, at this time, had a little room in the Magdalen’s apartments; this gave us many anxieties. One of these poor girls often spend part of the night and sometimes a whole night at the top of a ladder so as to see what was happening and to raise the alarm. Fear, often, caused her to see dangers that were non-existent, which were then the cause of perpetual alerts.

We were obliged, in order to go to the Chapel, to cross this part of the enclosure. Being frightened of meetings these unfortunates, we said Matins in the Community.

In the end we went to Court. The Procurator of the King came to the Monastery to take our depositions. The religious thus declared all they had witnessed. At about the same time, once when our Mother went into her cell, she heard a lot of noise coming from her neighbour’s room. We ran in and found that it was a big loaf that one of these unfortunates had taken from our serving room and put in his pocket so as to take it away more easily. We also lost a lot of linen, no matter how much care we took to gather it together.

Finally, the Lord delivered us from this calamity; as soon as the justices set up surveillance; it had meant three months of vigils, losses and sufferings. A long time afterwards we found out that it was a young man from the town, a very bad individual, and very rich, who wanted, in this way, to avenge himself on us because we had received into the class of penitents a charming young girl who was thus lost to him. We were happy enough to keep our dear sheep and to save it from the attacks of its enemies, who had become our own.” Annals Bk. I 1829-17-89. p. 74-75
