GSA Minutes Tuesday, Augst 2nd, 2011 5:30 pm WH 3042

Members present: Eric Tom, Mike Gleason, Paula Klutho, Ariel Burns, Aditya Bade, Pavan, Jacob Contreras, Nick ?, Hollie Siebler, Jamie McCall, Krupa Savalia, and Amanda Lakamp. Erin Rosenbaugh presided.

 Minutes from May meeting were approved.

 Old Business o Discussion of Zoo outing and behind the scenes tour with Dr. Armstrong last May . Dr. Armstrong sent an email to Jamie saying he enjoyed working with our group and thanked us for the gift card. . Students seemed to enjoy it, it was a good deal for the amount students were charged ($10/student, $15/guest) . It was recommended to possibly tour different areas each year. . Due to cost constraints we may have to charge more in future years, or only have the event every other year.

 New Business o New student orientation Thursday, August 19th ESH 3010 from 9:30 am to noon . New officers should attend from 11:40-noon . Will provided reason to participate in GSA o Organizational Fair is August 19th in CFHL gym from 11-1 pm

o Welcome Back BBQ (catered by Red Zone BBQ) . Friday, August 26th 11:30 to 1:30 in Swanson Courtyard or DRC atrium in case of rain . Dessert competition and fundraiser  Petty cash is low, we are trying to increase it  On campus you cannot charge for food unless it is prepared in a professional kitchen. Jamie is working on getting the fundraiser approved by charging to vote instead of charging for food. The Eppley Relay for Life team has done it this way in the past.  Fundraisers must be approved when on campus. Part of the approval means demonstrating that the fundraiser will benefit UNMC.  Jamie will continue to work on getting the fundraiser approved and will contact Krupa when it is. . Krupa will contact Red Zone BBQ to order food  Have Red Zone come a little earlier than last year . Someone will need to call security to get into the closet at the back of the DRC auditorium to get the tables. . Amanda will make a flyer . Ariel will bring petty cash to tip the server . Erin, Jacob, and Ariel will bring coolers . Krupa and Eric will go shopping for soda and chips in advance . If it is outdoors, GSA members will bring games (soccer ball, bocci ball, etc) . o Student health insurance informational meeting . Tere Batt (Fund B) and Pat Oberlander (Macori insurance) are willing to do it again. . Would like to get it done before the deadline for dental/major medicial coverage is due (sometime the first of Sept) . Possible dates are Tuesday, Aug 30th or Thursday Sept 1st at lunch. . Krupa will contact Tere and Pat to see when works for them . Ariel will order pizza

o Viewing of the PhD comics movie . Erin will contact PhD comics to see what is involved in having a screening on campus . If we can have it on campus it will be cheaper, otherwise possibly rent out a theater? . If costly and need a larger crowd we may invite Creighton and UNO graduate students

o GSA Halloween Havoc . Possibly held Oct 21st or 22nd, or Nov 5th. . Dr. MacDonald requested not to have it the weekend before Halloween due to 821 exams. . Also will try to avoid the weekend of Road Rally since it may hurt attendance. . Most likely will return to McFly’s.

o Discussion of fall and spring seminars . Panel of non-bench science careers (Patent law, consulting etc) . CV review/seminar – Michelle Perone from UNO . Grant writing seminar . Industry speakers . NIH speaker

o Discussed moving time of meeting to 5 pm and location to DRC building. o New group photo and officer photos were taken.
