Galloway National Show Gilsland 2006

Galloway National Show – Gilsland 2006.

Judge - Mr Andrew McConchie, Mains of Penninghame, Newton Stewart.

A grand total of 88 Galloway and Galloway crosses were entered for the 2006 Galloway National Show held in the heart of English Galloway country of Gilsland. This was the largest show of Galloways to be held in England this year if not this decade. The show, which was on Sunday 6th August, is prominently a sheep show, so the Galloway National Show were a welcome addition to the show and it was such a success, Galloway cattle classes could feature in future years, a very welcome return since cattle have not been on the livestock lineup since 1959. Although the weather was not us to the usual national show sunny weather, with everyone running for their waterproofs, this event passed everyone expectations and was a very enjoyable day for both exhibitors and spectators. Once again, we must thank all the sponsors who are listed below for their contribution in making the National show such a success especially Jim Paterson of the Royal Bank of Scotland and Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Rosehill Carlisle, who were our main sponsors. All at the BBQ had a very enjoyable night on Saturday night, although the midges were also having a feast. A special thank you goes to Lyn Smith who provided all the salad stuff and Kielder Meats, Hexham, for their excellent beef.

Leading the awards was the extensively shown heifer from J & S Ross, Romesbeoch, Bertha 214 of Romesbeoch, this Diamond B daughter was champion at last year’s national show at Dalmally and overall beef champion at Ayr show. This year she scooped the overall champion of champions at Stewartry and the breed title at Ayr, the Royal and the Great Yorkshire. The overall reserve championship, reserve female and the overall junior championship was Finmac Libby from new partnership, Mr W Maclean, Inverglen, Barcaldine, Oban and Mr John Finlay, Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas. This ET heifer on her first outing is backed by Australian bloodlines with the sire being Globex Quota and out of Globex Libby. The reserve male Blackcraig Nimrod from John Finlay, also has Globex breeding, his sire is Globex Winchester and out of Blackcraig Noreen D2 The leading male ticket was Diamond B Knockout 1K shown by Scott McKinnon, of Klondyke Farms, Moniaive, Dumfriesshire. This 6-year-old bull is by Diamond B Foremost. This was his 3rd outing, this year winning his class at the Highland and Male champion at Stewartry show. He is the sire of the overall champion. A delighted David and Mary Cormack, Abbots Close, Sutton Thirsk took the Reserve Junior Championship with Newstart Agatha. Her sire is Glenkiln Dynamite and her Dam Kingsford Penelope was champion at Carlisle sale.
