Title: The Review and Approval of BSL-3/ABSL-3 Standard Operating Procedures

Approved: May 28, 2008

Summary: The Tufts University Institutional Biosafety Committee and the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine Institutional Biosafety Committee (TCSVM IBC) are responsible for ensuring that work with biohazardous material complies with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) rDNA guidelines and the NIH/CDC guidelines for Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories. To comply with the guidelines and ensure the research is done safely, certain SOPs have been identified that must be considered during the review of a BSL-3/ABSL-3 registration.

All BSL-3/ABSL-3 registrations undergo a preliminary review before submission to the IBC. This review is done by either the Biosafety Manager or the Biosafety Officer. During this review, the Biosafety Manager/Biosafety Officer work with the PI to assure that all required SOPs have been described in the registration or are available for review as a separate document. When presenting the overview of the registration to the committee, the Biosafety Officer/Biosafety Manager will provide a summary on the status of the SOPs and will identify those which require committee discussion. In addition, any committee member may request any SOP be brought before the committee for a complete discussion prior to granting an approval.
