Content: An introduction to intellectual disability (formally known as mental retardation) and how it impacts learning and behavior. Practical teaching strategies will be demonstrated or shown by videotape.

Audience: Paraeducators working with students with intellectual disability in the moderate and severe range

Presenters: Mary Owens, M.A., Educational Specialist – Mary has worked as a special education teacher, a program specialist, an instructor at California State University, Los Angeles and continues to work with the Diagnostic Center, Southern California. She has extensive experience in the areas of Autism Spectrum Disorder, intellectual disability, and preschool education.

Objectives: To become familiar with intellectual disability, how it is diagnosed, and how it impacts learning and behavior. To become familiar with teaching strategies associated with students with intellectual disability in the moderate and severe range
