Lord Of The Flies – Character Journals

Lord of the Flies – Character Journals

 You will be assigned Jack, Ralph, or Piggy. You are going to keep an observer’s journal/diary of your character’s thoughts and feelings while stranded on the island. You will write in 3rd person, always observing what the character does, says, looks like, etc. Ex: If you are observing Piggy, you should state how he feels about everyone picking on him while on the island by saying “It appears that Piggy hates being taunted because he….”

 There are 12 Chapters in the book. After reading every 4 chapters, consider what is going on in your character’s mind. Write at least ½ page typed, SINGLE spaced (about 300 words), describing the character’s reaction to the sequence of events. So, you will be focusing on the main events of each chapter. This should be more of a reflection by the character, not a plot summary! You will need to include at least TWO integrated and cited QUOTES from the novel. Remember, quotes from novels do not always have to be dialog!

 You will complete a total of 3 journal entries (Ch. 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12).

 You will assemble all journals and turn in a typed assignment. Be creative and make it look like a journal for someone who was really stuck on an island. You can add pictures to it, use different types of fonts, etc. You should have a cover for your journal that includes the character’s name and your name.

 These journals will be due periodically. Chapters 1-4, due April 25th. Chapters 5-8, due May 4th. Chapters 9-12, due May 23rd. However, only when the final journal is due should all journals be typed.

If your character dies…you will still have to do the assignment. Just get creative!
