Greetings NERC Members;

September, 2015 Newsletter

Greetings NERC Members;

I hope that autumn finds you well and healthy for what is likely the best time of the year to run. There’s a lot to love about running in the fall. Cooler temperatures, candy corn, fall foliage, candy corn, ghost and goblin decorations on our routes, candy corn, new outfits to wear, and, …, candy corn! There are still lots of opportunities to race and PR, including our very own NERC race, the Autumn Leaves 5 Miler.

Everything about Autumn Leaves epitomizes fall running. The Lake Farmpark venue, the cross country style, the crisp temperatures, the corn maze, the kiddie costume fun run for kids, and the post-race food. Wait until you see the shirts for this year as well! The race is November 1st and is a great way to run off the Halloween candy (including the candy corn), and support our student scholarship fund. To learn more go to http://www.northeastrunningclub.org/event/nerc-grand- prix-race-autumn-leaves-5mile/, and/or ask a question on the NERC facebook group page.

It has been good to see many of you over the past few races. I especially appreciate people coming up to me and introducing themselves. Keep in mind that I do not particularly see or hear well (getting old ), so feel free to say hello over and over until I get it! Please don’t be put off by my clueless expressions and aloofness (and bald head).

NERC Board Positions Available

The success of our Northeast Running Club depends upon our wonderful members, volunteers, and sponsors. It especially depends upon our Board members, so please consider running or volunteering for a NERC Board position. Elections for President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary take place during our December meeting (December 8 at Tri-Point: also a yummy pot- luck), and there may be other positions available (including apprentice) that are appointed by the Board. Please feel free to speak with me, or any other Board member, if you are interested or semi-interested. We WILL find a place for you.

If you are curious as to the current slate of elected and appointed members for 2015, I have listed them below.

Other General Information

As you may know, Lake Health does a phenomenal job supporting our running club, from providing us meeting rooms, sponsoring races, and providing for student scholarships. As an added bonus in strengthening our relationship, Linda Pitts of Lake Health has been named as a liaison to NERC. Linda is now a proud, new NERC member. If you see her at a race or a meeting, give her a special welcome hello.

While the NERC Grand Prix consists of many races, there are currently 6 races run by NERC. These include Flag Day, the Cross Country Race Series (3 races), Dark Horse, and the Autumn Leaves 5 Miler. These races are special to NERC in that they allow us to raise money for our student scholarship fund, as well as Lake Metroparks (which provides us places to run and relax), and the Deepwood Special Olympics. The final figures will not be available until we close the books, but I believe that we have raised $250 for Lake Metroparks and $2500 for Special Olympics, plus funds for our scholarship. Thank you to all of the runners and volunteers that have made this happen.

Final Thoughts

If you are not planning to run, note that we still need volunteers for the Northern Ohio Marathon and the Autumn Leaves 5 Miler. This information, as well as information on other upcoming races, group runs and meetings is always available on our website, http://www.northeastrunningclub.org/.

Sincerely, Phil Scinto
