Academic Merit Scholarship Application for Dependent Children

2016 MARINE OFFICERS’ SPOUSES’ CLUB of OKINAWA (MOSCO) ACADEMIC MERIT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FOR DEPENDENT CHILDREN YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY IF:

You are the dependent child of an active duty U.S. Military member (ANY RANK) or GS civilian who is on an accompanied tour to Okinawa assigned to a USMC installation on Okinawa AND have current Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) status at the time the award is announced.

You are the dependent child of any retired U.S. Marine living on Okinawa.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

MOSC offers academic merit scholarships for dependent children, once a year in the spring.

Eligible students are:  High School Seniors enrolling in a full time undergraduate degree program.  Dependent children already enrolled in a full time undergraduate degree program.

All scholarship funds must be used at an accredited American University or College for tuition, books, and fees. If another source awards the student a full scholarship, the MOSC scholarship is forfeited. Scholarships will be mailed directly to the University or College the recipient will be attending. At the request of the student, an award may be transferred to another school at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. Students must activate the scholarship within six months of notification of the award or the award is voided.

Judges are not privy to the applicant’s personal information. Factors considered by the judges are: academic performance, essay, letters of recommendation and resume. Please retain this page for reference. Do not submit it with your application.

Your completed application must be RECEIVED by the close of business (3 pm) at the Marine Gift Shop on Camp Foster, or be mailed and POSTMARKED by Saturday, April 30, 2016.

Spelling and grammar are critical. Please submit a professional application free of typographical, spelling and grammatical errors. Proofread your application and follow all directions carefully.

In a sealed envelope, submit your application. Be careful to follow the directions on the bottom of this page. An application will be considered complete when all 7 (seven) parts are submitted. If one part (transcripts, for example) is missing, judges will not review the application.

1. Completed MOSCO Merit Scholarship Application Form 2. Official, sealed school transcripts from current high school OR from high school you have graduated from and college you are currently attending. 3. Two sealed letters of recommendation 4. Resume or similar listing of your work history, volunteer experience, extracurricular activities, and honors or awards, (if any) 5. Typed answer to essay question 6. A copy of your SAT or ACT scores 7. Submit 7 (seven) copies each of your resume, essay question answer and copy of your SAT or ACT scores with your name and any other identifying information redacted.

Please include two recommendation letters (on letterhead) with your package. One recommendation MUST come from a teacher or faculty member who is familiar with your academic work, within the last year. The second should also come from a professional, such as a teacher, counselor, coach, instructor or clergy member, also dated within this last year. Your references should explain how long and in what capacity they have known you. They should also comment on your academic, professional, and leadership potential and character. Letters of Recommendation are to be sent directly to the applicant in a sealed envelope. Please ensure that their contact information is listed on the application for verification purposes.
