Faculty of Health Science School of Dentistry Personal Competency Statement 1.1 Section 1: Interest In Oral Health Science To gain entry to the Graduate Certificate in Oral Health Science program, applicants should be able to demonstrate an informed interest in adult restorative care, and articulate a clear understanding of, and commitment to, the breadth and intensity of learning which is required in an adult therapy program.

1.2 Personal competency statement The personal competency statement allows you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills that you have in order to support your application to the program. You will be assessed according to how well your written statement addresses all categories and associated indicators. Your supporting statement needs to address:

. the reasons for choosing this program of study

. outline your expectations of the course/s for which you are applying and your capacity for independent study

. the skills, knowledge and abilities you believe will help you succeed

. you should also mention activities and experiences you may have had which indicate the extent of your interests in oral health and likely success in tertiary study Each of these criteria should be addressed individually. Be sure to provide specific examples of how you meet the criteria. There is a 1,200 word limit for personal statements.

1.3 Personal Competency Statement Guide

Structure: Use the four categories below as headings in your PC statement. Under each heading, write in paragraphs and demonstrate the associated indicators to the best of your ability. Style and language: Write your statement using formal, written language constructed in sentences and paragraphs. Do not use bullet points or other note forms. Punctuation, spelling, sentence and paragraph structure is important (one of the indicators in the category ‘Skills and knowledge’ is ‘Demonstrated ability to write clearly and correctly’). It is appropriate to write your statement using active voice and personal pronouns, for example, ‘I have completed…’

How is the PC assessed? The PC is assessed according to how well you have used examples from your life experiences to demonstrate the indicators in all four PC categories. A five point rating scale is used, with one being the lowest and five the highest. To obtain a five in a category, you must demonstrate all of its indicators to a high standard. Motivation to study Outline your career goals and the way in which this course can further these goals.

Independent learning strategies Relates to your capacity for self-directed study

Skills and knowledge (including interpersonal and communication skills) Relates to the skills and knowledge required to be successful in tertiary study and provide care to adult patients. It also relates to your ability to communicate clearly, particularly when using written and oral means, and the ability to interact effectively with others.

Achievement and experience Reflect on any relevant experience, expertise and achievements which are indicative of your interest in oral health or working with adults. It also provides an opportunity to demonstrate your readiness to participate in the life of a tertiary institution and preparedness for a lifetime of learning.
