HRC Meeting Minutes

March 25, 2010

The HRC Council met on March 25, 2010 at 3:00 pm. Members in attendance were Michelle Chaney, Geng’an Chen, Karen Cook, Kristin Hollis, Nellie Iordanova, Mike McNelly, Cheri Paradise, Janet Siders, Xu Wang, Chu- Chu Wu, and John Fox-Chairman. Members not in attendance were Toni Brown, Chief Bryant, Wanda Curtis, and Carie Young.

John Fox, Chairman, called the meeting to order and passed out the agenda which contained the following topics; Student Appreciation Day, HRC Website, HRC survey, Departmental evaluations, four-way stop, traffic signs, and Sanford parking lot, topics for next month’s meeting.

Student Appreciation Day- Members agreed that there had not been a lot of information put out about Student Appreciation Day. Concerns were expressed that perhaps due to the budget, that it would not take place. John was to email Josh and inquire on the status of the event.

HRC Website- All members agreed that the new HRC website looked good! Janet brought up the issue that since diversity is mentioned in the HRC statement, that it would be a good idea if the GSW diversity mission statement was included on the website as well. There will also be a group photo of current members and an email link added to the new website.

HRC Survey update- The HRC would like to conduct a simple survey of faculty/staff consisting of just 2 questions: What is the best thing about GSW, and what could be improved at GSW. John reported that he had contacted Dr. Paul Shapiro about conducting a survey and what guidelines to adhere to while doing so. Dr. Shaprio advised John that if the survey were to be used just for brainstorming and not for publication, then the council could send out a simple fac/staff email asking for people to go to the HRC website, click the email link, and take the survey. A prize would be awarded to the winner. Amber DeBaise, Auxillary Services Director, will be coming up with a prize package to give away to survey winner.

Departmental Evaluations- This idea was again put on the table for discussion. John would like for the survey to be simply customer service oriented. The survey would be the type that would help each department to improve their customer service ability. Several departments already conduct self-surveys like this. Several members asked as to who would conduct the survey as this wouldn’t be done by the HRC but by GSW to improve itself. Nellie expressed that Dr. Shaprio should do the survey and Chu-Chu suggested that each department should conduct their on. No resolution was reached, will continue to discuss. Traffic signs, 4 way stop, and Sanford Parking Lot- This continues to be discussed as to how to improve the traffic signs around on the Newman Alumni House that calls the drivers attention to the pedestrian crossing. The signs are small and the same color as the pavers of the pedestrian crosswalk itself. Drivers are continuing to ignore the signs and put the pedestrians at danger. The 4-way stop signs also continue to be a “hot bed” of danger with the stop signs placed more forward then the crosswalk. No one seems to know who has the right of way. It was also suggested that the incoming and outgoing arrows in the Sanford Hall parking be repainted. No one goes in or out in the proper direction, and 3 accidents have already occurred there recently because of this. A staff member contacted Arthur Clark in the physical plant about repainting but has not heard back. Discussion will continue as how to improve the safety of these areas.

New topics for the next meeting- possible handicap door at the Java City entrance into the foyer of the MSC, and additional caffeine free drinks offered in vending machines.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 29th, 3:00 in Sanford Hall room 210.
